The Lord Reims Stakes 2017 field runs at Morphettville Racecourse this Saturday in South Australia as the final official lead-up into the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) back at the track on Monday March 13.
Adelaide Cup Day is a public holiday in SA and the two mile classic attracts a host of stayers that come out of a run in the $120,000 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m).
This autumn’s Lord Reims Stakes is set to run as Morphettville Race 8 at 4:48pm (SA time) on Saturday, the set weights plus penalties clash attracting 15 final acceptors.
One of the in-form stayers in the mix drawn well mid-field in barrier seven with Clare Lindop to ride is the Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Mail It In.
The ultra-consistent Reset four-year-old has run top two in his six latest starts including his win in the Listed Birthday Cup (2020m) run at Morphettville Parks on February 18.
The progressive gelding blitzed runner-up Extra Zero by nearly four lengths that day earning a step-up in grade and distance for the Lord Reims Stakes this weekend.
Mail It In also rises from 54kg to the equal 56.5kg top weight on Saturday giving the gun galloper a tough task to continue his ace run of form.
Currently Mail It In pays $31 in pre-field Adelaide Cup odds, a price set to firm should he live up to the task on Saturday.
The other horse allocated 56.5kg for the Lord Reims Stakes this season is the Darren Weir-trained Master Of Arts in gate five with John Allen riding.
A five-year-old Mastercraftsman stallion, the gallant grey has had just the one previous run at the Morphettville track for a 2014m win in April last year with Allen aboard on 60kg.
Winner of the Warrnambool Cup next time out, Master Of Arts ran four straight fourth place efforts in Melbourne over the summer before his last start eighth behind 2017 Sydney Cup-bound three-year-old Northwest Passage at Moonee Valley on February 17 in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m).
Master Of Arts is one of the best fancied of the Lord Reims Stakes contenders in futures Adelaide Cup betting at a current quote of $15 in markets led by the Lloyd Williams-owned import Bondi Beach ($5).
Drawn a treat in gate three and coming into the clash off same impressive recent Adelaide racing form is veteran eight-year-old Tunes.
Prepared at Murray Bridge by Grant Young, the Viscount gelding has been to the Morphettville track 17 times to date for three wins, eight seconds and two thirds.
He was last seen saluting by one and three-quarter lengths over 2250m at Morphettville Parks on February 25 in a Benchmark 82, gun form heading into Saturday.
Other key Lord Reims Stakes acceptors on the weekend include the Tony McEvoy-trained Big Memory paying $31 to win the Adelaide Cup 2017 and improve on an 11th in the two mile clash back in 2014 and the rails-drawn Second Bullet for Danny O’Brien.
