A gun lead-up to next month’s Australian Guineas takes place at Flemington Saturday in the form of the CS Hayes Stakes 2017, betting tips and the latest odds on the three-years-old clash found below.
There are 15 remaining hopefuls in this season’s $150,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) on Black Caviar Lightning Day after the early scratching of #4 Trenchant (3) from the Godolphin stable.
Leading the updated CS Hayes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4 and firming is the Tony McEvoy-trained Hey Doc.
This Duporth gelding is second-up after a third to the filly Legless Veuve in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) on February 4 and will relish the step-up in distance returning to Flemington for the first time since a fourth to Comin’ Through in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) during the spring.
It’s an open CS Hayes Stakes betting market with other key fancies including the Lindsay Park-trained Emirates Stakes runner-up Seaburge ($5) first-up from a wide alley and John O’Shea’s remaining runner Morton’s Fork drawn in gate two with Craig Williams to ride the Sandown Guineas winner.
So will the best in betting get the job done or is there value tipping an upset CS Hayes Stakes result from the likes of Inglis Dash third placegetter Land Of Plenty ($10) or the Ciaron Maher-trained So You Think colt Kaching ($9.50)?
#3 Hey Doc ($4)
From the good gate with the first-up run behind him, the favourite looks hard to beat in this. Beaten 1.5 lengths resuming over 1200m and will close that gap getting out over the extra distance here. Has winning form over a mile in Moonee Valley’s Stutt Stakes from last September and Luke Currie knows this horse well. Caulfield Guineas third shows he has class, consistent, on the improve and looks well placed to salute for the punters.
#6 Inside Agent ($17)
Knock-out odds offered on this local Nigel Blackiston-trained Stravinsky colt who could prove the value bet of the day. Hugh Bowman is on a high after the Winx win first-up and is aboard this proven 1400m performer. First-up eighth in the Manfred Stakes can be forgiven, he’ll be better after the run getting back to this distance. Runner-up at the track / distance on Emirates Stakes Day with Bowman aboard in a narrow loss, and also won the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1400m) here last October. Up in class but if he handles it he can present as a danger.
#1 Seaburge ($5)
Class alone has to have Seaburge finishing in the money. The smart colt was runner-up in the Caulfield Guineas last spring and rounded out his campaign finishing under a length away second to Awesome Rock taking on the older horses here at Flemington in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m). He’ll be better over further, but goes well fresh and has won over these metres.
