2017 Golden Slipper Field Narrows: Second Acceptances

The Golden Slipper Stakes 2017 second acceptances closed this week with over 200 juveniles still in the race to make the field for the world’s richest two-years-old event.

Running at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday March 18, the $3.5 million Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) is one of the key Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature races.

First acceptances for the classic last October attracted 1,500 plus entries, a figure cut to 259 including 247 named horses at second declarations on Tuesday.

Leading the early outright Golden Slipper Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Toby Edmonds-trained filly Houtzen ($6) from the Gold Coast in Queensland.

The undefeated daughter of I Am Invincible has won all three of her starts to date including her half-length success from the outside alley (16 of 16) in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 14.

Last season’s Golden Slipper Stakes winner Capitalist (2016) also won the Magic Millions Classic giving Houtzen the right form line to repeat the lucrative double this season.

Capitalist was prepared by Peter & Paul Snowden and the stable have a dozen entries looking to go back-to-back in the Golden Slipper results this season.

2017 Golden Slipper Second Acceptances: Key Trainers

  • Hawkes Racing (24)
  • John O’Shea (22)
  • Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott (19)
  • Mick Price (17)
  • Peter & Paul Snowden (12)

Among the Team Snowden contingent are the highly-fancied duo of Khan and Pariah.

Exceed And Excel colt Khan won the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick on debut last October and is listed as a $13 hope in futures Golden Slipper odds.

Early favourite Houtzen is out to complete the Magic Millions Classic – Golden Slipper double achieved by Capitalist last season

Pariah is a two-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice who won the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) first-up at Rosehill last Saturday.

While officially still in the Golden Slipper Stakes mix, Pariah is confirmed to head south this autumn and is early favourite to win the $1.5 million Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 25.

The fillies are prominent in the Golden Slipper Stakes markets this season with Houtzen followed on single-figures by She Will Reign ($8).

2017 Golden Slipper Stakes Second Acceptances: Early Favourites

She Will Reign is a two-year-old daughter of Manhattan Rain prepared by Gary Portelli who has a total of four Golden Slipper Stakes hopes in the mix.

She has won her opening two career starts, most recently annihilating her rivals by four lengths as the $2 favourite at Randwick on December 17 in the lucrative $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) run on a Heavy (8) track.

Fillies have won three of the past seven editions of the race, most recently in 2014 with the Team Hawkes-trained Mossfun.

Along with Mossfun, co-trainer John Hawks also prepared the 1997 and 2007 Golden Slipper Stakes winners Guineas and Forensics respectively.

Hawks Racing are in with a bumper 24 Golden Slipper Stakes second acceptors this autumn.

Other early favourites in the markets include the Gerald Ryan-trained Magic Millions Classic runner-up Chauffer, his stablemate Menari who ran second to Pariah in the Canonbury Stakes and Invincible Star.

Group 3 winning I Am Invincible filly Invincible Star is prepared by Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, Waterhouse boasting a record six Golden Slipper Stakes victories since 2001 most recently with Vancouver (2015).

This season Waterhouse & Bott have a dominant 19 second Golden Slipper Stakes acceptors including also promising Snitzel filly Dinnigan and last Saturday’s Group 3 Widden Stakes runner-up Mystic Empire.

Check out the updated Golden Slipper Stakes 2017 odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au now before the final field is released on Tuesday March 14.
