Magic Millions Day on the Gold Coast kicks off on Saturday with the Magic Millions Maiden Plate 2017, betting on the field of hopefuls now out and featuring a host of livewire chances.
Due to jump at 11:40am (AEST), this summer’s $250,000 Pacific Fair Magic Millions Maiden Plate (1200m) will run at capacity with sixteen starters.
The first emergency Kotinos from the Robert Smerdon stables has already gained a start after the early scratching of Deep Image who drew out wide.
The card opener at the Gold Coast on this now $10 million Magic Millions race day is always a tough one for the punters, but current markets are led by Dortmund at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au and firming.
Hugh Bowman is booked to ride the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Snitzel colt who has had just the one run to date.
On debut the three-year-old ran a close second over 1200m in the mud at Canterbury in mid-December and he has trialled well since at Wyong.
With Bowie aboard, Dortmund stands a strong chance to go one better with a win on the weekend after the brave debut and a number of gear chances will help him overcome the wide barrier (16).
Occupying the second line of Magic Millions Maiden Plate betting this summer at $4.60 and also backed early in from $5.50 is the well-performed Mount Panorama for Gary Moore.
Jumping from a gun barrier five draw with Tim Clark riding, this Sebring three-year-old has already been to the races ten times.
He has been placed three times all in Group class as a two-year-old including his thirds to Astern and Souchez respectively in Rosehill’s Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes last autumn.
Last start he lined-up in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m) and crossed fifth to the effortless winner Egyptian Symbol.
Always honest, Mount Panorama is against easier company here looking to regain the former top juvenile form with blinkers and a tongue-tie added to his gear.
The only other runner under $10 to break their maiden status in the first at the Gold Coast on Saturday at $8 is Dot Painting.
Brenton Avdulla is booked to partner the Sebring colt, now prepared by Bjorn Baker who could be in for a big day including saddling-up the odds-on favourite Winning Rupert in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.
The best of the rest in Gold Coast Magic Millions Maiden Plate markets representing the value include the Gary Portelli-trained Group 2 performed Stratum filly Zafina ($12), the rails-drawn Husson Boots ($14) for Brisbane’s Tony Gollan and Kerrin McEvoy’s mount Omiya ($14) who is a son of Foxwedge coming off a Rosehill trial win.
