Stratum Star Tops 2017 Magic Millions Trophy Field

The Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star is charged with the hard task of carrying the top weight in the Magic Millions Trophy 2017 field at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

One of the key events on the $10 million Magic Millions Race Day line-up in Queensland, this summer’s $1 million Moet & Chandon Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) field has the full sixteen starters plus a single emergency.

Heading the field and the Magic Millions Trophy weights allocated a hefty 61kg is in-form five-year-old Stratum Star.

The stallion is dual Group 1 winner and took out his first race since October of 2015 with a last start victory at Ascot in Perth’s Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on December 3.

Stratum Star goes up from 59kg that run three kilos for the Trophy and jockey Damian Lane retains the ride for the horse’s first start at the track and over further than 2000m.

The only other Magic Millions Trophy final acceptor allocated more than the 54kg minimum this year is the Peter Robl-trained Centre Pivot (55.5kg) in gate six with Blake Shinn booked for the ride.

Shooting for four consecutive wins is the flying Lindsay Park-trained Boom Time drawn near the inside in barrier two with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Williams rode Break The Barrier (2006) to victory in the Magic Millions Trophy just over a decade ago and chases a second success in the Restricted staying showdown on Flying Spur stallion Boom Time.

The five-year-old has winning form at the distance and was last seen taking out a 2500m handicap at Flemington on December 17.

Also coming off a win and drawn well in gate three is the Ben Currie-trained Col ‘N’ Lil from Toowoomba.

Kerrin McEvoy stays aboard the Bradbury’s Luck mare who took out a 2200m quality handicap at Eagle Farm on New Year’s Eve.

She has been to the Gold Coast three times previously for two second place efforts and shapes up as a big chance in the Trophy this weekend.

Drawn wider but with the distance to overcome their double-digit barriers are the likes of the Bradley Smith-trained San Telmo (16) and the Brian Smith-trained Feltre (15) who comes off a fourth to Col ‘N’ Lil.

Stuart Kendrick saddles-up two chances in the Magic Millions Gold Coast Trophy field with stablemates Bold Heart and Gypsy Miss drawn alongside each other in barriers eight and nine respectively.

Christian Reith rides Show A Heart three-year-old Bold Heart who takes on the older gallopers here on the back of a fourth only last Saturday at the track over 1800m.

He will enjoy the drop back from 57kg to 54kg in the Magic Millions Trophy as well as the step up in distance, but will need to be improving against the open age field.

Fellow three-year-old Gypsy Miss is also racing in nice form, the filly finishing top three in her past four starts including a third in the same lead-up race as Bold Heart.

Other noteworthy hopes in the mix include the Tony Gollan-trained Cramming who has plenty of form over 2200m and the Pat Duff-trained four-year-old Show Command who comes off back-to-back Toowoomba wins over the mile.
