Magic Millions Cup 2017 Field Features Most Important

Top Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan saddles-up his flying four-year-old Most Important in the 2017 Magic Millions Cup field on Saturday chasing a second success in the Gold Coast showdown.

Gollan won the race back in 2012 with Spirit Of Boom and has one of the livewire chances in this summer’s edition of the $1 million Restricted Listed Magic Millions Cup (1400m).

The handicap clash attracted the full 16 starters plus five emergencies and Most Important came up trumps with barrier six, which could become three if the spares fail to gain a start.

The son of I Am Invincible has won his last three starts on the trot including the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) in early December.

He was last seen saluting over 1300m at Eagle Farm on New Year’s Eve carrying 58kg to victory and he drops to 56kg on the weekend as Robbie Fradd retains the ride.

Heading the Magic Millions Cup weights with 61kg is the reigning champion Lucky Hussler for Melbourne Cup winning horseman Darren Weir.

Brad Rawiller sticks on the Husson seven-year-old who he rode to victory on November 12 in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) in Melbourne.

Lucky Hussler gives the weight away to his rivals, but is a dual Group 1 winner and had only a half-kilo less for his Magic Millions Cup victory last Queensland Summer Racing Carnival.

Weir has also accepted for Kenjorwood, but could scratch the galloper in favour of a Flemington run after he drew wide with barrier 18.

Damian Lane is booked for the ride on the Snippetson seven-year-old who comes off back-to-back December wins in Melbourne including Caulfield’s Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) on Boxing Day.

Kenjorwood had 60kg for his win for the punters that day and looks well-weighted for the Magic Millions Cup with 55.5kg.

Also allocated that same weight is Robert Heathcote’s consistent Mossman six-year-old Hopfgarten drawn gate seven with Larry Cassidy riding.

Hopfgarten has had three previous Gold Coast runs without a top three finish, including the disappointing 10th in last year’s Magic Millions Trophy (1800m).

He has been racing well over the summer however including a close fifth to Sense Of Occasion in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) in Sydney two back and his third at Eagle Farm on New Year’s Eve in the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m) under 59.5kg.

The other last-start winner in the mix is the Michael Moroney-trained Fastnet Rock four-year-old Loyalty Man.

He saluted over 1550m at Canterbury on December 31 and comes back from 56.5kg to the 54kg minimum in the Magic Millions Cup with Craig Williams riding.

Williams is after his second Magic Millions Cup victory after guiding Plans (2006) to victory over a decade ago for trainer David Hayes.

Peter & Paul Snowden have three final acceptors but only Snippets Land in gate eight is assured of a run with Choice We Had and Skytrek relegated to the last two emergencies.

Third-up on Saturday, Snippets Land drops from 59.5kg to 54.5kg and caught the eye on December 24 at Rosehill beaten only one and a half-lengths by Ecuador in the December Handicap (1400m).

Other notable hopes include the rails-drawn Bachman for Gerald Ryan, December Handicap third placed Off The Rails and the Team Hawkes-trained Snoopy who was runner-up in that same Sydney lead-up.
