Admiral Wins Second Tasmanian Stakes – 2016 Results

The Apple Isle’s star galloper Admiral retained his title in the Tasmanian Stakes overnight at Launceston Racecourse enjoying another black-type win as the odds-on favourite.

Prepared by Spreyton’s Barry Campbell, the Mossman five-year-old continued his stellar form at the track posting a 10th win from 14 starts at Launceston when narrowly taking out the $100,000 Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes (1600m).

His fourth mile win from six starts at the distance, Admiral also completed the Conquering WFA Stakes – Tasmanian Stakes double for the second straight year.

Ridden by Victorian-based Luke Currie the weight-for-age champ, who has now amassed over $730,000 in career prize money, had a quarter-length to spare on the line last night over the Scott Brunton-trained Hellova Street ($7.30).

It was a repeat of the Conquering Stakes trifecta from December 7 as Adam Trinder’s smart Bushranger four-year-old ran third again a further length back.

Finishing dead last in the Tasmanian Stakes results was veteran 10-year-old Geegees Blackflash in what is likely to be his swansong career start.

The galloper has enjoyed wins in most of Tasmania’s biggest races including the 2010 Tasmanian Derby, 2012 and 2015 Hobart Cup and 2013 Launceston Cup.

Next-up for Admiral over the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival are Hobart’s Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) and Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) at Launceston in February.

He won the Thomas Lyons last summer improving on his second in the 2015 edition and was first past the post in the George Adams, but lost the latter after producing a positive swab to the local anaesthetic Lignocaine.

Admiral also won the 2015 George Adams Plate in a gun effort over Tasmania’s cult horse The Cleaner before heading to Melbourne that autumn for a luckless fifth when blocked for a run in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) as a three-year-old.
