A class field of short-distance specialists face off in Brisbane’s 2016 Bribie Handicap to close the Doomben card on Saturday, betting tips for the sprint clash found below.
Due to jump at 4:48pm (local) as Doomben Race 8 on the weekend, this year’s $100,000 Listed Bribie Handicap (1050m) is set to run with a capacity 14 starters including emergencies The Storeman and Yoho who come in for Sold For Song and Wicked Intent – both withdrawn due to wide barriers.
Heading the latest Bribie Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are Upstart Pride ($4.40) and Architect ($4.50) engaged in a battle for favouritism.
Upstart Pride is first-up for the season, Michael Nolan’s Tycoon Ruler five-year-old having his first start since July.
He is a first-up flyer boasting three wins and a second from four resuming runs to date and has plenty of form over Saturday’s distance (10-3-3-1).
Second elect Architect is also first-up not having raced since March, the 53 start veteran another sprint specialist with four wins, a second and a third from nine runs over the Bribie Handicap metres.
It’s a wide open edition of the clash though opening up value further down the Bribie Handicap betting markets in the likes of the ultra-consistent Tony Gollan-trained seven-year-old Casual Choice ($6.50) and Tony Sears’ six-year-old Hard Stride ($10) down in class after finishing 6.6 lengths away last (11th) in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago.
Gollan’s older sprinter gives the weight away to his rivals on 58kg but is drawn to get a gun run in barrier five with Jim Byrne aboard the evergreen Choisir gelding. He has had eight runs at the Doomben track for three wins and two seconds and loves this distance (6-3-2-0). Goes well fresh and races for the first time since posting his third win on the trot at the track over 1100m under 59kg back in early April. Freshened-up since and ready to return to that gun form and is well priced.
Good double-figure offering for Pat Duff’s nine-year-old who may be getting on in the years, but who was racing well in the winter including a Grafton third in the Ramornie Handicap. Last start over the Doomben mile in June was disappointing at the end of his prep, but will be better first-up after a nice second in a 1050m Deagon trial in late November. Lines-up at the track for the 29th time and is never far away. Deserves respect.
Gary Portelli-trained Sydney raider coming off a below par effort under 58kg at Moonee Valley from November. Ran a close fourth over 1100m at Doomben prior to that in the winter, and his other latest run here produced a Listed win over 1050m defeating Wicked Intent by two lengths in May. Was runner-up in the April edition of this race, handles the track well, is a definite short course horse and will by flying with only 54.5kg on his back from a gun gate four draw.
