Jameka Targets Australian Cup 2017

Trainer Ciaron Maher has confirmed plans to target the 2017 Australian Cup at Flemington in the autumn with his Caulfield Cup winning mare Jameka.

The four-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie enjoyed her biggest win to date over the spring beating home English raider Scottish by three lengths in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

It was her second elite level title following a VRC Crown Oaks win the season before as a three-year-old.

Jameka has also posted a further three minor placings in Group 1 class and will be out to add to her imposing record when she returns in 2017 during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

She was last seen finishing 15th to Almandin in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 1 when failing to see out the two miles and suffering a minor injury.

Maher expects her back in his stable this week and is happy with how she has recovered over her time in the paddock.

Jameka is set for a light autumn campaign to keep her fresh for the spring and would kick things off on February 11 at Caulfield in the $500,000 Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m).

From there Maher hopes to have her in full fitness ready for the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on Super Saturday at Flemington a month later, March 11, third-up.

“She’ll probably kick off in the Orr and then run in the Peter Young and Australian Cup and that might do her or we might just give her one more run but it certainly won’t be a taxing campaign,” Maher told Racing Victoria.

The Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) is held at Caulfield on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day, February 25, and has produced two of the past three Australian Cup winners including Fiorente (2014) who completed the double.

“She’s done well down in the paddock at Warrnambool and we’ll probably bring her back into the stable today [Tuesday] and map out a plan heading towards the Australian Cup,” Maher added.

“She’s improved every campaign and I suppose that has to level out somewhere but she looks in great order and has spelled really well so hopefully she’s in for another good preparation.”

Mares have a stellar recent record in the CF Orr Stakes with four wins in the past seven years including Suavito (2016) last autumn.

The last mare to win the Australian Cup meanwhile was the mighty Makybe Diva (2005).

Jameka is also already the $17 co-favourite with Hartnell to defend her Caulfield Cup title in futures betting on the spring feature at Ladbrokes.com.au.
