Sydney-based trainer Gary Moore will consider a Hong Kong Sprint bid in December with his class sprinter Takedown should the four-year-old take out Saturday’s 2016 Winterbottom Stakes in Perth.
Australia is set to be represented in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin on December 11 by Gary Portelli’s Manikato Stakes winner Rebel Dane who flies out on December 3.
Takedown could join the dual Group 1 champ in the Hong Kong International Race Day feature if he can beat home the better fancied interstate raiders in the $1 million Crown Perth Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot Racecourse this weekend.
A final field of 12 sprinters takes to the track on Saturday for the latest Group 1 of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Current Winterbottom Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the confirmed runners is led by last start Darley Classic winner Malaguerra ($3.50) and the Joe Pride-trained Terravista ($3.50) who won that same Flemington Group 1 back in 2014.
Takedown meanwhile is also at single-figures in Winterbottom Stakes betting at $8, an equal price with sizzling local sprint star State Solicitor.
A four-year-old son of Stratum, to date Takedown has won six of his 19 career starts including three from six over the Winterbottom Stakes distance (1200m).
First and second-up in Sydney this spring he enjoyed back-to-back Group 2 victories at Royal Randwick.
He then travelled south to Melbourne and finished runner-up to Voodoo Lad in Caulfield’s Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) on Cup Day and fifth last time out behind Rageese in Flemington’s Group 3 Chatham Stakes (1400m) on Oaks Day.
Dropping back in distance Moore’s stable representative Marc Chevalier told Racing Victoria that Takedown was a livewire chance, especially looking at how well he’d handled the trip to Perth.
“It looks a good place for a horse that likes to lead and so we go into Saturday’s race with a bit of confidence that he’ll run well,” he said on Monday.
If Takedown does score an upset Winterbottom Stakes win, Chevalier said the stable would seriously consider accepting a Hong Kong Sprint invite.
“It’s probably a tough ask to go to Hong Kong after Perth but we’ll see if he gets an invite and see what happens this weekend,” he said.
The 2016 Winterbottom Stakes barrier draw is set to take place shortly so stay tuned.
