One of the key races on the Zipping Classic Day card at Ladbrokes Park this weekend is the Ladbrokes Sandown Cup 2016, betting tips and the latest odds for the two mile Black-Type listed below.
There are six Group status races on the program, but plenty of punters will also be tuning into Race 3 at 1:35pm (AEDT) on Saturday to watch the stayers line-up in the $150,000 Listed Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m).
Originally the Sandown Cup field attracted 11 hopefuls but the early scratching of Cinnamon Carter and Sly Romance leaves nine starters.
Heading the updated Sandown Cup odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au at a short $2.05 is the 58.5kg top weigh Qewy.
Drawn the rails with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy to ride, the Charlie Appleby-trained English raider is the class horse and should be able to handle the kilos.
He won his down under debut in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) with McEvoy aboard before the brave fourth behind Almandin in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Proven over the two miles, he rises notably from 50.5kg in the Melbourne Cup run, but still looks the one to beat in far easier company on Saturday.
The other major players in the Sandown Cup betting markets this spring after the upset include the Danny O’Brien-trained De Little Engine ($5) coming off a fourth in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) last weekend and Geelong Cup fifth placed Swacadelic ($9).
So will the nearly odds-on favourite Qewy continue the good run of the raiders in the staying showdowns in Melbourne on Saturday or is there value tipping a longer priced fancy such as Bendigo Cup fourth placegetter Bring Something ($13) or the Chris Waller-trained Four Carat ($10)?
Really is hard to go past the firming top fancy who is approaching odds-on territory for a reason. The two miles is definitely this UK raider’s go and from four runs over the distance the son of Street Cry has enjoyed a second and two thirds. His fourth in the Melbourne cup also was strong, even though he was on just 50.5kg. Big weight rise for this, but big drop in class. McEvoy is back aboard after riding him to victory in the Geelong Cup two back. Is the one to beat and he deserves to give this much weight away to his rivals.
Nice price offered for Aaron Purcell’s six-year-old import who ran fourth over 2800m, beaten under a length at Flemington on Cup Day. Carried 59kg there and is down to 54kg here with a good run on the cards from gate two with Glyn Schofield booked for the ride. Fifth in the Geelong Cup was okay and will see out the 3200m having run fifth in the Adelaide Cup and fourth in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes over the distance already this year.
Money coming for this Encosta De Lago six-year-old who comes off back-to-back fourths at Flemington. First was in the Lexus and then in last weekend’s Queen Elizabeth. He drops from 55.5kg to Saturday’s 54kg minimum and is out to improve on his sixth in the race 12 months ago.
