Seventeen stayers have been included in nominations for Saturday’s 2016 Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m), highlighted by the pending appearance of some of the Spring Carnival’s most consistent performers.
Almoonqith hit the line well for sixth in the Melbourne Cup last Tuesday and has been included in 2016 Sandown Cup nominations; a race he won in 2015.
Almoonqith has been a strong and consistent performer across all corners of the globe since making his debut in late 2012, and resumed this time for eighth in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) on August 27th.
It appeared as though it could be a long and fruitless spring for the Dynaformer entire when he placed fourteenth in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and eighth in the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2500m).
Rated little chance if any in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), Almoonqith mustered an impressive late turn of foot to savage the line for fourth, in what was his only other start prior to the Melbourne Cup.
De Little Engine has produced a number of commendable efforts this season and appears as though he will contest his preparation swansong at Ladbrokes Park, after being included in 2016 Sandown Cup nominations.
Taking a couple of runs to find competitive form upon resuming this year, the Encosta De Lago gelding ran on for a credible seventh in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2400m), before another strong display for ninth in the Caulfield Cup.
Having since finished fourth in each of the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m), De Little Engine appears as though he will relish a step up to 3200m in the Sandown Cup.
Qewy charged home for fourth in the Melbourne Cup last week and is arguably the horse to beat in 2016 Sandown Cup nominations as a result.
Qewy has been a strong and consistent performer for prominent British trainer Charlie Appleby this year and immediately announced himself to the Australian racing community with a smart win in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 19th.
Qewy’s form and class is sure to count for plenty when he arrives at Sandown on Saturday and the result of the race could be a foregone conclusion.
The 2016 Sandown Cup field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
