2016 Melbourne Cup Day: Tips & Preview

The race everyone has been awaiting all spring is here with the ‘race that stops a nation’ lighting up Flemington Racecourse this afternoon and we’ve got the insider Melbourne Cup Day 2016 tips below.

Hartnell

Hartnell is the 2016 Melbourne Cup betting favourite – but will he salute for the punters in Flemington Race 7? Photo: Steve Hart.

Three Group races and a trio of Listed events are on the line-up, but everything fails in comparison to the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) being run and won as Flemington Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEDT).

Hartnell ($5.50) leads the Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, but money is starting to come in for the only Australian-bred horse in the bumper 24 starter field Jameka ($9 into $7.50).

There are nine other Melbourne Cup Day races warm you up and cool you down pre-and post the big one and to help you sort the contenders from the pretenders, check out our expert Flemington race tips before heading to Ladbrokes.com.au to back your selections at the home of Odds Boost on the Cup field.

Race 1 (10:40am) – $150,000 Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m)

  • #1 Madeenaty ($1.60)
  • #5 Margot ($41)
  • #12 Straviera ($11)

Group 3 for the two-year-old fillies to kick off the card and with so many unraced hopes it is wide open for the Cup Day punters. Odds-on favourite though is the Lindsay Park-trained Madeenaty, the only non-maiden in the mix, and after her Listed Maribyrnon Trial (1000m) win down the straight by the big margin on debut she’ll be hard to stop again. Did it by 2.25 lengths, returns to track / distance and drawn to win in three.

Race 2 (11:20am) – $100,000 TAB.com.au Trophy (1700m)

  • #2 Metaphorical ($12)
  • #11 Model Dragon ($3.20)
  • #8 Sort After ($3.60)

Handicap for the older mares and some class in this. Metaphorical is out wide, but it’s a small field and that looks a non-issue. She looks overs after nice lead-up form, she’s building to finish on a high and just needs to handle the weight. Model Dragon is light weight and undefeated so a danger, while Sort After is too consistent not to have in the money.

Race 3 (12:00pm) – $100,000 Prince Of Penzance (2800m)

  • #18 Super Haze ($7.50)
  • #3 Murphy’s Delight ($6)
  • #9 Firenze ($11)

Staying showdown named in honour of last year’s Melbourne Cup winner. Tony McEvoy’s lightly-raced Super Haze comes off a 2400m win at Geelong and gets in on no weight making him a danger to post his third win on the trot. Murphy’s Delight for Chris Waller comes off the perfect prep and has Bowman aboard, while Firenze for Darren Weir looks the value with the super-consistent Place Rate.

Race 4 (12:40pm) – $100,000 Lavazza Prontissimo (1400m)

  • #3 Demonstrate ($1.50)
  • #2 Sebring Sun ($10)
  • #7 Magic Boy ($21)

No value in the win with the odds-on favourite deservingly so and coming off the cracking form. Could be a massive day for O’Shea and J. Mac who combine in this. Big value in open place markets. Sebring Sun for Weir has the big weight but third to Keen Array at Caulfield in Black-Type company last start was good, and Magic Boy is way overs after his solid Melbourne run after the consistent form at home in Adelaide.

Race 5 (1:20pm) – $100,000 Schweppes #FlemingtonFling (1000m)

  • #6 Liberty Song ($51)
  • #4 Ashlor ($15)
  • #10 Speedeor ($4.80)

Every day needs a blow-out win and for our roughie of the day Liberty Song on the rails coming off a Pakenham win is it. Only Flemington run to date in winter saw him beaten eight lengths, but he’s matured since and can atone. Ashlor is undefeated and Speedeor is the lightly-raced improver for Weir.

Race 6 (2:00pm) – $150,000 Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m)

  • #9 Prompt Response ($11)
  • #3 Sweet Sherry ($5)
  • #12 Invincibella ($13)

The three-year-old fillies face off at set weights plus penalties and like Prompt Response at double-figures even from out wide with McEvoy aboard. She was narrowly beaten in the Crockett Stakes at the Valley and will appreciate the roomer Flemington track. Her last start conqueror Sweet Sherry is obviously the danger again having won two of her last three, the Group 1 performer also proven at Flemington. Invincibella also flying for Waller in Sydney ahead of Melbourne debut here.

Race 7 (3:00pm) – $6,000,000 Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m)

  • #1 Big Orange ($13)
  • #6 Hartnell ($5.50)
  • #17 Almandin ($10)

Race 8 (4:00pm) – $150,000 Listed James Boag’s Premium Stakes (1800m)

  • #10 Tashbeeh ($12)
  • #13 Tarquin ($9)
  • #17 Plot The Course ($8)

Tashbeeh for Lindsay Park can be forgiven for his unplaced Flemington runs over 1400m at his last two. Will relish getting out over further and has a strong record at the track (8-3-0-3). Tarquin is early market mover for O’Shea and comes off the gun lead-up form including a JRA Cup third two back to Real Love. Plot The Course gets the run of the race and was impressive over a mile last time out.

Race 9 (4:40pm) – $150,000 Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m)

  • #11 Sir Bacchus ($5.50)
  • #1 Faatinah ($9.50)
  • #6 Secret Agenda ($10)

Straight six sprint is always exciting and this is wide open with a bumper sized field. Like the shorter ones in betting especially Sir Bacchus in five with Waller’s four-year-old coming off the Moonee Valley win. Faatinah gives the weight away but has class and Secret Agenda can bounce back and is the danger with D. Oliver in the saddle.

Race 10 (5:15pm) – $200,000 Group 3 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m)

  • #6 Artistry ($6)
  • #3 Silent Sedition ($3.90)
  • #13 Denpurr ($13)

Sticking with Peter & Paul Snowden’s mare who is a consistent performer in Sydney and is out to bring that form to Melbourne, will be better second-up and could surprise. Silent Sedition has claims with the pace to suit and Williams aboard, while Denpurr comes off the cracking lead-up form.
