Prized Icon has produced a career-best performance to win the featured Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Racecourse this afternoon.
Prized Icon has all but forgotten in 2016 Victoria Derby betting markets as punters focused firmly on race-favourite Sacred Elixir, but the colt did his chances of success no harm when he jumped well and immediately switched off, as Morvada led the field past the post the first time.
Steven Arnold ensured that the field would be reasonably strung out as he continued to press Morvada forward over the back straight, but the Moonee Valley Vase placegetter was spent by the time the field reached the final turn and the race appeared to be set up for Sacred Elixir to pull clear upon straightening.
The Kiwi raider locked in a battle with Swear with 400m to run, but Prized Icon had worked himself into the clear and proved that he was the race’s superior stayer with a big turn of foot to finish two lengths in the fore of his rivals.
Jockey Glyn Schofield delivered a perfectly-timed ride aboard Prized Icon to win the Victoria Derby and revealed that he was confident that he was on the horse to beat this afternoon.
“James has worked this horse out to a tee,” Schofield said.
“He came into this race with the same sort of preparation and number of runs as he did when he won the Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old.
“To culminate that, bring him back as a three-year-old and win a Derby is fantastic.
“There was a few anxious moments when we weren’t sure if he was going to take his position or not, but thankfully the decision was made, he took his place and we had a pretty trouble-free race.
“At the Valley last week he just got a bit lost and I knew with a big open space today, he would show his best.”
In saddling Prized Icon to win this afternoon, James Cummings became the fourth generation of the famous racing family to win the Victoria Derby, and the up-and-coming trainer was understandably thrilled with the horse’s performance.
“I think like most trainers this will take a little while to sink in,” Cummings said.
“The first thing I can reflect on is how beautifully Glyn had this horse travelling, particularly in the early stages.
“To win staying races like these, horses just love being in their own space and today was chalk and cheese from what we saw of this horse last week, where we saw none of that.
“He’s been the model of consistency since he won the Group 1. His whole career, this is thirteen starts now for ten placings and this is his second Group 1.
“Although winless leading up to today, he just continued to show such strength and the miles of miles on Cummings training have kick in, and he’s kicked away to win a Derby nicely and convincingly.”
Prized Icon jumped as a $17 chance in 2016 Victoria Derby betting markets with online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
