Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A major lead up to next Thursday’s Crown Oaks, the Wakeful Stakes 2016 takes place on Victoria Derby Day this weekend at Flemington and betting tips along with the latest odds on the three-year-old fillies’ feature can be found below.
Due to run as Flemington Race 2 at 12:20pm (AEDT) on Saturday, this season’s $300,000 Group 2 Mumm Wakeful Stakes (2000m) runs with 17 hopefuls led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by Tiamo Grace ($3.70).
She jumps from a midfield barrier eight draw, the Darren Weir-trained Monaco Consul Stakes filly coming off a brave second to Eleonora at Caulfield in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m).
Enjoying her first run at the distance and her first Black-Type assignment, Tiamo Grace showed genuine staying pedigree as her breeding suggested she would and is now tipped as the one to beat in the Wakeful.
The early Wakeful Stakes betting market mover backed in from $7 to $4.80 is Pretty Punk, also bred to go the distance of this and the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).
Trained in Adelaide by Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas, she is a daughter of the upset Victoria Derby winner from 2008 Rebel Raider who stole the show at Derby odds of 100/1.
Winner of the Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1800m) at home two back, Pretty Punk debuted in Victoria on October 19 running third to a genuine VRC Derby hope on the weekend Captain Duffy in the Listed Geelong Classic (2200m).
Beaten only 1.35 lengths that day, there’s money coming for her to enjoy the drop to 2000m back against a field of her own kind on Saturday.
So will the two best in betting be first past the post in the Wakeful Stakes results or is there value tipping another top fancy such as the improving Lindsay Park-trained daughter of Sebring Sebring Dream ($3.50) or an outside hope in the markets like the well-tried Alliterate ($11) for an upset? Our 2016 Wakeful Stakes Trifecta Tip is #2 Pretty Punk from #7 Waterloo Sunset and #6 Tiamo Grace
#2 Pretty Punk ($4.80)
Happy to follow the market move on this daughter of a past Victoria Derby winner and tip the Rebel Raider filly to post her third win from her past four starts. Her only run outside of SA was the Geelong Classic last time out, and she more than held her own when third to Captain Duffy. She looks a genuine stayer so will peak in the Crown Oaks if she goes there, but she can sneak in a win here at Flemington back against the girls.
#7 Waterloo Sunset ($16)
Good price offered on the longer priced stablemate of Sebring Dream. This Fastnet Rock filly was third two back in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, before her disappointing 11th in the Ladbrokes Stakes against the boys over the 2000m last time out. She has another go at the distance, handles Flemington, is back against the girls and from gate three with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira aboard think she can atone.
#6 Tiamo Grace ($3.70)
Deserving favourite after her luckless second in the Ethereal last start on Caulfield Cup Day. Out to go better with a clearer run and salute in her first stakes’ win. This is just her second Black-Type start but the distance suits, she has upside, is nicely bred for a race like this (and further) and if she gets the right run could be hard to beat late.
