Capitalist Leads 2016 Coolmore Stud Stakes Field

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Capitalist is accepted to run on VRC Derby Day down the Flemington straight on Saturday in the Coolmore Stud Stakes 2016 field.

Winner of the Golden Slipper as a two-year-old in the autumn, the gun son of Written Tycoon is one of just 10 final acceptors for this weekend’s $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

Due to run as Flemington Race 5 at 2:25pm (AEDT) as one of four elite levels on the all-Group nine race card for the opening Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting, the Coolmore Stud Stakes pits the season’s top three-year-old sprinters against each other.

Blake Shinn continues his association on the Golden Slipper winning colt Capitalist this weekend third-up, the galloper looking to improve on a last start third to stablemate Russian Revolution in Sydney’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).

He jumps from barrier seven, which last produced a Coolmore Stud Stakes winner in Weekend Hussler (2007), with co-trainer Peter Snowden looking for his first win since the success of star colt Sepoy (2011) five years ago.

Russian Revolution also represents Team Snowden in the Coolmore Stud Stakes field on the weekend looking to retain his undefeated status.

To date the smart son of Snitzel has won all four of his career starts, including the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield and the Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick on October 1.

The Roman Consul Stakes has provided the past three Coolmore Stud Stakes champions all prepared by Chris Waller.

The double has been achieved twice in that time with Zoustar (2013) and Brazen Beau (2014), Russian Revolution out to be the next.

Kerrin McEvoy retains the ride and chases his third win in the sprint classic following winning rides aboard Innovation Girl (2002) and the aforementioned Sepoy (2011).

Three of the past five Coolmore Stud Stakes winners came off a last start winner and along with Russian Revolution, a further four acceptors have that form leading up to Saturday’s edition.

The most notable of those is the Mick Price-trained Extreme Choice who beat home a field of older rivals first-up in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley last time out.

Craig Newitt stays in the saddle of the $1.65 million earning Not A Single Doubt colt who runs at Flemington for the first time on the weekend.

Extreme Choice is already a dual Group 1 champion with the Moir Stakes win following his two-years-old success in the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Runner-up in the Blue Diamond Stakes to his stablemate before a subsequent Golden Slipper third to Capitalist, Flying Artie is another gun Coolmore Stud Stakes chance for Price in the race this Derby Day.

The Artie Schiller colt is second-up in the Group 1 after taking out Caulfield’s Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) as the odds-on favourite on October 12.

He is in top form ahead of his next Group 1 test, although Price admits Extreme Choice likely has the edge as the trainer chases the Coolmore Stud Stakes quinella.

Other headline acceptors include the John O’Shea-trained Golden Rose winner Astern coming off a Roman Consul Stakes second, stablemate Archives who won the Group 2 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) on Cox Plate Day and the Team Hawkes-trained Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) winner by 2.25 lengths on October 8 Star Turn.
