2016 Myer Classic Nominations Feature Abbey Marie

Michael Kent’s undefeated Abbey Marie is set to return to racing this Victoria Derby Day heading the Myer Classic 2016 nominations.

The Group 1 winning daughter of Redoute’s Choice was originally entered to run first-up on Cox Plate Day last weekend, but has been saved for the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

She has won all three of her career starts to date including the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide back in May.

That was her last run and Saturday could mark her four-year-old debut should she run in the Myer Classic field at Flemington Racecourse over the mile.

A host of more recent last start winning mares are also among the headline Myer Classic nominations this Melbourne Cup Carnival including the John Thompson-trained First Seal.

As a three-year-old filly back in 2014 she beat home now dual Cox Plate winning super mare Winx in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).

Since then the now five-year-old has enjoyed three subsequent Group 2 wins, most recently on Caulfield Cup Day in the Tristarc Stakes (1400m).

Saturday sees her return to a mile for the first time since a failed 12th to Winx in the autumn’s Doncaster Mile and will be just her second Melbourne run after the Tristarc win.

The past five Myer Classic winners all came off a Caulfield lead-up including two of the past four out of the Tristarc Stakes with: Appearance (7th in 2012) and Red Tracer (1st in 2013) who completed the double First Seal shoots for this weekend.

The other best out of the Tristarc Stakes nominated for a rematch in the Myer Classic is the third-placed Exceed And Excel four-year-old Pearls.

Prepared by John O’Shea for Godolphin, she also ran third to Tycoon Tara – a subsequent second in the Tristarc – in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) in Sydney two back and gears up for her first Flemington start on Saturday.

The other last start winners meanwhile are the Ron Quinton-trained Dixie Blossoms (Group 3 Angst Stakes, 1600m, Randwick, October 8); the Team Hawkes-trained Euro Angel (Group 3 Ladies Day Vase, 1600m, Caulfield, October 12); and the Tony McEvoy-trained Don’t Doubt Mamma (Group 2 Stocks Stakes, 1600m, Moonee Valley, September 30.

A four-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt, Don’t Doubt Mamma also won the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington two back.

She shoots for three wins on the trot then returning to a track she has won three from six over to date after the month freshen-up.

The other highest-rated nominee outside of First Seal is the Lindsay Park-trained Rising Romance, the six-year-old best known for her Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) win back in 2014.

Other notable Myer Classic hopefuls include the Tristarc Stakes fourth-placed Denmagic, Thousand Guineas runner-up I Am A Star coming off a third in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) from last weekend and Thousand Guineas third placegetter Whispering Brook scratched at the gates from her Cox Plate Day assignment.

See below for the full Myer Classic 2016 nominations, the final field and barriers out on Wednesday making now the time to sign-up with Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Enhanced Odds (T&Cs apply).
