Tony McEvoy’s Caulfield Guineas placegetter Hey Doc could shoot for a consolation win in the Carbine Club Stakes 2016 on Victoria Derby Day this Saturday at Flemington Racecourse.
An all-Group race card is scheduled for Derby Day 2016 including the $200,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) for three-year-old milers.
This year’s Carbine Club Stakes nominations attracted a bumper 23 hopefuls vying for a spot in the capacity 16-starter field on the opening Melbourne Cup Carnival race day.
One of the key early entries is Hey Doc who also holds a nomination for the $1 million Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) against the older horses at the meeting.
Racing in consistent fashion this campaign, the Duporth gelding won three on the trot including the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley before a close last start third when under a length off Divine Prophet in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.
In the pre-field Carbine Club Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, Hey Doc is at $5 for the win in an open futures market.
Heading all-in Carbine Club Stakes betting at $4 is the John O’Shea-trained Morton’s Fork, a graduate of the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day.
The Godolphin-raced Ad Valorem colt finished 1.3 lengths away fifth to the winner Peacock in the race and is tipped to appreciate his first look at the mile this weekend.
Sandwiched between Morton’s Fork and Hey Doc in the early Carbine Club Stakes markets on the nominees is Acatour ($4.50) prepared by Peter & Paul Snowden.
The Sebring colt is yet to finish worse than third in his five career starts to date that have produced a trio of wins and a last start third in the Gothic Stakes in a blanket finish.
A host of last start winners are also featured in this year’s Carbine Club Stakes nominations including another O’Shea-trained runner, Bezel.
The Street Cry colt has won all three starts in Sydney this campaign in non-Black Type company.
In his latest he carried 61kg to victory over the Randwick mile on October 15 and at set weights plus penalties will appreciate dropping in weight for his first Group run and Melbourne start.
Bezel is rated a $9 chance for the win just longer then Comin’ Through and Seaburge on $7.
Fastnet Rock colt Comin’ Through is prepared by Sydney’s best Chris Waller and is also nominated to hand his trainer a fourth straight win in Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Seaburge is also entered for more than one Derby Day race.
Prepared by the Lindsay Park stable, the last start Caulfield Guineas runner-up is also in the mix for the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) over the staying distance as well as the 2016 Cantala Stakes – formerly the Emirates Stakes.
Adelaide raider So You Too is in flying form at home having won his past two on the trot over 1200m.
The nicely-bred So You Think colt is entered for a notable step up in both class and distance should he travel to Melbourne for the Carbine Club Stakes, his first run over further than 1200m and outside of South Australia.
See below for the full Carbine Club Stakes 2016 nominations, the field and barrier draw set for release on Wednesday followed by updated betting at Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Enhanced Odds (T&Cs apply).
