The Geelong Cup 2016 takes centre stage in Victoria today, Wednesday October 19, betting tips and the latest odds on the historic staying showdown and early Melbourne Cup betting guide found below.
Due to jump at 4:00pm (AEDT) as Geelong Race 7 this afternoon, the $300,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) field is down to just eight runners after the scratching of: #1 Who Shot Thebarman (10), #3 Arab Dawn (11) and #8 Black Tomahawk (3).
Updated Geelong Cup betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are a wide open affair and currently the Irish import Grey Lion ($3.50) prepared by Matt Cumani and fellow international expat Oceanographer ($3.40) battling for favouritism.
The OTI Racing-owned Grey Lion hasn’t run since a dead last (8th) in the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) in France back on August 21, but reports from Werribee are he’s been working well.
He matched-up in a recent gallop with Exospheric who ran third to Jameka in the Caulfield Cup result last Saturday, so that form can be further franked in the Geelong Cup.
Oceanographer is a Godolphin-raced UK visitor also first-up off an unplaced effort overseas in York in August, but that Ebor Handicap seventh was better than it reads and he’s a genuine shot on the 54kg lightweight at Geelong.
Also at single-figures are the likes of the rails-drawn Kinema ($4.50) out to improve on his recent runs on harder going when he debuts for Chris Waller here and Charlie Appleby’s second English raider Qewy ($5).
It’s all about the internationals and imports in the Geelong Cup field and markets, but without a genuine standout see below for who to back and who to sack.
#9 Oceanographer ($3.40)
In the Ebor Handicap (2816m) this five-year-old son of Sea The Stars ran nine lengths back for seventh behind Heartbreak City carrying 60.5kg. He is right down in weight first-up in Australia and needs to win this if he is to get into the Melbourne Cup field on November 1, the reason connections brought him down under. He was even money with Grey Lion earlier in the week, but the punters are coming for him and we’re happy to follow the market move.
#7 Lucques ($8)
Good price still on offer for this fit Victorian prepared by Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra out to hold off the raiders. He was last seen running sixth in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on October 2 and is on the lightweight again here. He’s got winning form at the track and with the fitness edge and good gate (3) can challenge.
#2 Grey Lion ($3.50)
If the lead-up work at Werribee is to go by, this galloper could be hard to hold out. He’s got class and is down in weight off his runs back in Europe earlier in the year. Goes well fresh and the distance suits, so if he can return to his best he’ll take some beating.
