Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Tony McEvoy’s flying mare Don’t Doubt Mamma is the headline nominee for the Tesio Stakes 2016 run on Cox Plate Day this Saturday as the Merlin Garage Door Openers Stakes.
The handicap mile showdown for the mares is part of a bumper 10-race Moonee Valley card on the weekend and this year the $150,000 Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) has attracted 17 early entries.
Heading the Tesio Stakes nominations, handicap ratings and ballot order is McEvoy’s four-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt Don’t Doubt Mamma.
She chases her third win on the trot after narrow victories at Flemington in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and Moonee Valley last start in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m).
Proven at the track / distance, Don’t Doubt Mamma has had three weeks between runs and goes up from 56.5kg last start to the 59kg top weight on Saturday if accepted for the race running as the Merlin Garage Door Openers Stakes.
Despite top kilos in the Tesio Stakes weights, the bookmakers are taking no chances and she heads the pre-field markets at $2.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au to extend her winning streak this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Second to Don’t Doubt Mamma in the Stocks Stakes was the Darren Weir-trained Canny Lad six-year-old Kaniana, also nominated for a rematch in the Tesio Stakes this weekend.
She has had a subsequent run however after her sixth to Euro Angel at Caulfield in the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) when beaten three lengths on October 12.
Following Don’t Doubt Mamma in the Tesio Stakes nominations and weights is the John Thompson-trained Zanbagh (56.5kg) chasing her first win since the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) in Sydney back in March.
The six-year-old daughter of Bernardini has had two runs this time in, both in Sydney, but has past experience in Melbourne.
She improved on a last (10th) in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) on October 8 running fifth to Dixie Blossoms in the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m), but will need to be improving to feature at The Valley this weekend.
Better fancied in futures Tesio Stakes betting is the $4.60 second elect, Lady Le Fay from the star stables of Chris Waller.
She has strong form over the mile (7-3-12) including the Angst Stakes last time out ahead of her first Moonee Valley assignment.
Adding even more interest to the Tesio Stakes entries this season is the undefeated Michael Kent-trained Abbey Marie who hasn’t raced since the winter.
The lightly-raced daughter of Redoute’s Choice has won all three of her career starts to date, most notably the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide on May 7.
Other notable nominees include Matthew Dale’s Ladies’ Day Vase runner-up Rocket Commander and the reigning Tesio Stakes winner Coronation Shallan after her first victory since.
See below for the full 2016 Tesio Stakes (Merlin Garage Door Openers Stakes) nominations before heading to Ladbrokes.com.au where first-time depositing players (excluding NSW) are eligible for up to $700 in match deposit bonus bets with use of the code SPRINGBONUS (T&Cs apply).
