A full field of middle-distance sprinters face off in the last on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday, the 2016 Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes betting tips and latest odds update found below.
Bringing the action at Caulfield Racecourse to a close as Race 10 at 5:45pm (AEDT), the $150,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes (1400m) is set to run at capacity with 16 starters plus an emergency awaiting a run.
Heading the latest Moonga Stakes betting markets at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au are Voodoo Lad ($3.50) and Takedown ($3.70) battling for favouritism.
Early money has seen the in-form Darren Weir-trained I Am Invincible five-year-old Voodoo Lad shorten into narrow top fancy on the back of his brave second in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the track / distance a fortnight ago.
Coming off back-to-back Randwick wins in Sydney and looking to stay undefeated this campaign is the easing second elect, Gary Moore’s Rosehill-trained Stratum four-year-old Takedown.
Takedown won the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) first-up before a tight win over Our Boy Malachi last start in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) so third-up should be ready to peak over 1400m.
So will the top two in betting be the first two past the winning post for Saturday’s Moonga Stakes result or is there value further down the markets in the likes of Robert Heathcote’s Brisbane visitor Hopfgarten ($9) dropping in weight second-up, Sir Rupert Clarke third placegetter Fast ‘N’ Rocking or even last start winner at the track a fortnight back Lucky Liberty ($21) drawn to get the run from gate two?
1st
#4 Takedown ($3.70)
Hard to knock the Sydney form of this super-consistent four-year-old who is on the up and up. He is in Melbourne for the first time since last year when he failed to make an impression, but his form over the past 12 months has been outstanding. Was outclassed in the Stradbroke Handicap (14th), but that was his only bad run of late. Two Group 2 wins at Randwick leading up to this and he’ll be set to peak getting out over the 1400m three runs in. Can handle the weight, barrier five is ideal and Blake Shinn stays on. Happy to take the easing odds.
2nd
#16 Lucky Liberty ($21)
Early market mover still over $20 for the win makes for an excellent value exotic selection and each way chance. The local Henry Dwyer-trained Statue Of Liberty five-year-old won a much easier assignment here over 1200m carrying 58.5kg from barrier 13 of 13 a fortnight back and can improve off that. This is his first Group assignment since the failed 13th in the Australian Guineas over the mile at Flemington in the autumn, but he’s shown improvement since and dropping to 56kg and drawn better in gate two gets the chance to give Chris Parnham a win after he lost a Caulfield Cup ride on the scratched Big Memory.
3rd
#9 Durendal ($14)
Also at double-figures but with genuine claims is this Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained son of Medaglia D’Oro in gate three. He comes off a Flemington third on Turnbull Day in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) beaten only 1.25 lengths. Has had five goes at Caulfield for two wins and a third so handles the track well, is a Group 3 winner looks on the improve and Damian Lane retains the ride.
