Kicking off the Black-Type racing action on Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday in Melbourne is the Gothic Stakes 2016, the full field and betting odds plus tips for the three-year-old colts and geldings clash found below.
Due to run as Caulfield Race 2 at 12:50pm (AEDT), this year’s $120,000 Listed Polytrack Gothic Stakes (1400m) originally drew a final field of 14 youngsters.
The early scratching of Magnarock (13) leaves 13 in the mix with the updated Gothic Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the market mover and firm favourite Acatour ($3.20 into $2.50).
Drawn a treat in a mid-field barrier six draw with Blake Shinn continuing his association with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Sebring colt, Acatour chases his fourth win from five career starts.
He is yet to finish out of the money and was last seen winning over 1500m at Rosehill in late September by three lengths ahead of his Melbourne debut on the big stage this weekend.
Following closely in the Gothic Stakes betting markets at $3.80 is Morton’s Fork drawn one closer to the rails in barrier five as he chases a third win on the trot.
John O’Shea trains the Ad Valorem colt who is also visiting from Sydney on the back of gun lead-up form including a Benchmark 74 handicap win over 1300m at Rosehill by two lengths carrying 59kg.
The drop back to 56.5kg here under set weights plus penalties is an advantage and he chases a second win from as many starts over the distance, looking to continue his gun career strike rate (6-3-3-0).
Rounding out the single figure hopes at $7.50 is Nikitas, Hugh Bowman riding the Chris Waller-trained Snitzel colt who comes off a fourth as a $71 roughie behind Russian Revolution in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight back.
So is the Sydney form the one to follow south this weekend or is there value tipping an upset Gothic Stakes result from the likes of the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Curvature ($20) or last start Poseidon Stakes third-placed Lonhro colt Peacock ($16)?
#3 Inside Agent ($12)
Nigel Blackiston’s lightly-raced Stravinsky colt did plenty wrong second-up at Flemington to win the Listed Poseidon Stakes (1400m) down the straight and at this price has enough upside to suggest even slight improvement can see him frank that form and go back-to-back over the distance. Gets the inside run from barrier one here and Michael Walker stays on. If any beats the Sydney horses it’s this up-and-comer.
#9 Peacock ($16)
Happy to ignore the bookies’ suggestions and stick with the Melbourne form in this with the Godolphin-raced galloper coming off the third to Inside Agent and looking to turn the tables. Has his own previous winning form at the 1400m, Dwayne Dunn is a good replacement for J. Mac in the saddle and barrier three gives him the boxseat if he wants it.
#7 Acatour ($2.50)
Really is hard to knock the top fancy and his consistency in Sydney leading into this. Has won two on the trot with Shinn aboard and the same hoop is in Melbourne for the colt’s Black-Type debut. Down in weight so that’s another plus and is a genuine winning hope after doing it so easy with the three length romp over 100m further on September 28.
