Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Caulfield Sprint 2016 runs as the penultimate event on Caulfield Cup Day’s 10-race program on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds for the short-distance showdown found below.
Due to jump at 5:10pm (AEDT), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Dilmah For Lovers of Tea Caulfield Sprint (1000m) originally drew a final field of 11.
The line-up is down to 10 after the early scratching of the Robbie Griffiths-trained Grane (4).
Updated Caulfield Sprint betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by the short-priced and firming favourite Hellbent ($2.25 into $2.05).
Jumping from barrier five, the Darren Weir-trained stallion has won three of his past four starts in easier company, the latest over 1100m at the Caulfield track by 2.25 lengths on September 24.
Craig Williams retains the ride on the smart four-year-old who is undefeated over the 1000m and gets in on the 53kg minimum in the Caulfield Sprint field.
So will Hellbent salute for the punters or is there value tipping an upset result from further down the Caulfield Sprint odds in the likes of the returning superstar Lankan Rupee ($9) first-up in over a year, Mark Kavanagh’s in-form mare Wild Rain ($6) or Our Boy Malachi ($5.50) coming off a second in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) in Sydney?
#4 Wild Rain ($6)
Going for value in this talented and ultra-consistent daughter of Manhattan Rain. She won the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1200m) last time at Caulfield in the winter and comes off two Moonee Valley runs. The first was a Group 2 McEwen Stakes win over the 1000m and the latest was the brave third behind Extreme Choice in the Group 1 Moir Stakes, also over 1000m. This is her pet distance (12-6-1-2), she has no issues at Caulfield, she drops from 56.5kg last time out to 54kg, gets the boxseat from barrier three and ticks plenty of boxes.
#5 Hellbent ($2.05)
The deserving favourite based on the ease of which he won over 1100m here last time out. He is on 53kg, Williams stays in the saddle and he is two-from-two over the 1000m. He looks to have the class, but is in Group company for the first time since running last (12th) here in late August’s Group 3 The Heath 1100m. Can he beat these? He’s in peak form and will be staying out of trouble from a wider barrier, but needs to be at his best.
#1 Lankan Rupee ($9)
Class alone suggests this multiple Group 1 winning sprint star can snag the upset. He hasn’t raced since October last year, but all reports on the Mick Price-trained seven-year-old are that he’s bouncing out of his skin and ready to get back to what he does best. Craig Newitt reunites and is thrilled to be back on the $4 million earner who has plenty of form at Caulfield (8-4-0-2) and the 1000m (8-5-2-1).
