Hear The Chant Wins 2016 Thoroughbred Club Stakes for Hayes

The Lindsay Park stabled continued their good Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day run scoring a double in the third with progressive filly Hear The Chant covering ground to win the Thoroughbred Club Stakes 2016.

After success in the day’s opening race with Wait For No One in the Inglis Debutant Stakes, David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig enjoyed another Black-Type win at Caulfield in the $150,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m).

Last time out Nicconi filly Hear The Chant failed to beat home any of her rivals with a luckless 12th to Selenia in Moonee Valley’s Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m).

Co-trainer David Hayes described it as the “best last place I’ve ever seen” and was not all that surprised to see the improver’s class shine through with a Group win next-up.

“[Last time] she wasn’t disappointing, just frustrating,” Hayes explained.

Ridden by Dwayne Dunn for the third time in as many career starts, Hear The Chant settled towards the back of the Thoroughbred Club Stakes field led around by a trio of front runners.

Returning favourite with the rails run, In The Vanguard, was away quick from the gates and led narrowly in the early stages from the Champagne Stakes winner Selenia who was posted three wide.

Also up on the pace was the Paul Perry-trained Conchita, while Peter & Paul Snowden’s daughter of Poet’s Voice My Country was next best trailing fourth.

Around the home turn jockey Michael Walker still had the John Sargent-trained Sydney raider In The Vanguard in the lead narrowly, with Summer Glen just off the front runners when cornering.

It was a messily run final 200m with the likes of Prompt Response and Conchita, who looked two of the best in running, copping a check.

Getting the clear run and the big advantage in the closing stages were My Country and the fast finishing Hear The Chant, while down the outside Modern Wonder for Team Corstens was also closing quickly.

On the line Hear The Chant ($9.50) narrowly got through in the middle ahead of the consistent My Country ($8) and Modern Wonder ($19) who improved on her second at the track over 1100m three weeks back with a nice late run.

“I had no luck on her last start and I’m thankful for the team that they stood up for me and put me back on her,” winning hoop Dunn said post-race.

“She’s shown us exceptional ability at home and now here today.”

Hayes was thrilled to get the successful Thoroughbred Club Stakes result with Hear The Chant who could now head to a Cox Plate Day run at Moonee Valley on October 22 in the $150,000 Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m).

“She put her career best up there [today],” Hayes said.

“She trialled with Chautauqua down the straight and showed she’s got lovely class.

“I think there’ll be more wins in store for her.

“It’s nice whan a plan comes off and she’s a Group winner now.

“We’ll probably head to the Valley over 1200m and have another crack there in a Group 3.”
