Winner of the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley two back, Fastnet Rock five-year-old Awesome Rock is out to improve on his fifth to Black Heart Bart on September 24 in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

He carried 59kg that day and was beaten 3.55 lengths, the stallion heading the weights with 58kg for this Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) on Caulfield Guineas Day.

Four of the past six Toorak Handicap winners carried 58kg to victory including Lucky Hussler (2015) last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The second heaviest weighted of this year’s Toorak Handicap nominations is the Darren Weir-trained Japanese import Tosen Stardom (57.5kg).

Weir has won the past two Toorak Handicaps on the trot with Trust In A Gust (2014) before the aforementioned Lucky Hussler 12 months ago.

Deep Impact six-year-old Tosen Stardom is yet to race at Caulfield, but his first-up fourth in the Dato’ when under three lengths off Awesome Rock back on September 3 was impressive.

Pre-field Toorak Handicap odds at on the early entries have Tosen Stardom as the $4.50 all-in favourite to improve off the month freshen-up.

Weir has also nominated for Royal Rapture who is in flying form coming off five consecutive wins.

Paying $11 in futures Toorak Handicap betting to keep the winning streak going on Saturday, the seven-year-old son of Clangalang is up notably in class if accepted, not having raced in Group company in the past year.

The other best fancied of the entries for the win pre-field are He’s Our Rokkii ($5) and Bon Aurum ($6), both also last-start winners.

Lindsay Park trained Roc De Cambes four-year-old He’s Our Rokkii who has won four straight dating back to early April, including successive 1400m Caulfield victories over the past month.

The latest saw the gelding carrying 58.5kg to a 3.25 length win on September 17, the drop right back to 55kg this weekend if accepted into the Toorak Handicap field to suit.

Bon Aurum (56kg) represents Ciaron Maher, the Bon Hoffa four-year-old coming off the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the track a fortnight back carrying only 52kg.

The past four Toorak Handicap winners were all Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes gradates, with the last to complete the double being Trust In A Gust two years ago.

Other notable nominees include the Chris Waller-trained Redoute’s Choice stallion Counterattack looking to improve on the sixth in the Sir Rupert Clarke, Underwood Stakes runner-up He Or She and the Tim Martin-trained Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) winner in Sydney on September 24 Moral Victory.
