2016 Dulcify Quality Results: Moqueen Wins at Big Odds

Anthony Cummings continued to live up to his form of preparing smart winners at big odds during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival with young filly Moqueen running the race of her life to score an upset in the Dulcify Quality 2016 at Royal Randwick.

The daughter of Uncle Mo came into this season’s $125,000 Listed Dulcify Quality Handicap (1600m) on Epsom Handicap Day as a maiden after seven starts, breaking through for her first victory as a $21 shot in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Her lead-up run was a fifth over 1550m at Canterbury from earlier in the month, and after a freshen-up she and jockey Jason Collett had enough in the tank to run down he rivals in Saturday’s three-years-old clash over a mile.

Hot favourite was the Chris Waller-trained Octavian Augustus drawn the rails who jumped away okay before jockey Craig Williams restrained her, allowing Glyn Schofield to roll forward and lead on Hessdalen.

Also up on the early speed battling for front running was the John Thompson-trained Our Belisa, a last start winner over the distance at Kembla Grange.

Williams continued to try and get cover in running aboard Octavian Augustus, finally get wind resistance settling fourth on the fence heading towards the home turn.

Around the bend big race specialist Hugh Bowman made his move on Waller’s Redoute’s Choice colt Earth who saluted at Newcastle a fortnight back, coming up four wide around the outside.

On the straight Schofield moved off the fence on the Michael Freedman-trained Hessdalen, allowing Williams to poke through on Octavian Augustus.

In the closing stages though it was all about Moqueen ($21) who came bolting from mid-field down the outside to beat home the progressive John O’Shea-trained Reset colt Nemrud ($5.50), while Earth ($5.50) got up for third to finish off the trifecta.

“It was a really good effort, she put them away pretty easily in the end there,” winning jockey Collett said post-race.

“Pretty impressive.”

Last season another filly Ambience (2015) beat home the boys in the Dulcify before heading south for a successful Melbourne campaign.

She ran third in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) on Caulfield Cup Day, won the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on VRC Derby Day and eventually finished third in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on a wet track just five days later.

A similar path could now be plotted out for this year’s Dulcify Quality winner Moqueen if she continues to handle a rise in class and distance.
