It’s Somewhat Leads 2016 Craven Plate Nominations

The John O’Shea-trained It’s Somewhat is the top-rated nomination taken by Racing NSW for the Craven Plate 2016 on Epsom Handicap Day this Saturday in Sydney.

Six Group races highlight the Royal Randwick race card on the weekend including the $150,000 Group 3 APN Outdoor Craven Plate (2000m) for the weight-for-age staying types.

Just 10 early entries were received for the race on Monday including the Godolphin-raced import, Dynaformer six-year-old It’s Somewhat.

It’s Somewhat also sits top of the pre-field Craven Plate betting markets at paying a short $2.10 to post his first win since the Group 3 Sellwood Stakes (2000m) over the same distance at Rosehill in the autumn.

The galloper comes off a number of eye-catching runs of late however including the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) third to Our Ivanhowe in the winter and the last start third to Australia’s best horse Winx in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) a fortnight back.

He should be improving getting up over 2000m this weekend, but from seven previous starts at the Randwick track has just the two third place efforts.

Close second elect in the all-in Craven Plate odds this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival is the Darren Weir-trained Raw Impulse ($2.70) who is a triple nominee across two states on the weekend.

The consistent five-year-old Makfi stallion is a gun over the 2000m (3-1-2-0) and was last seen winning a Listed race over 1800m in Adelaide by nearly five lengths.

He should relish the extra metres next-up then, but is also nominated for a Moonee Valley run on Friday night in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) as well as the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Sunday.

Also high-up the early Craven Plate markets is the Chris Waller-trained Spiritjim ($4.80) who is second-up coming off a fifth to his star stablemate in the George Main over the mile.

The imported Galileo seven-year-old has had just the three runs down under and is yet to finish in the money, but back in Europe he has winning form from 2000 – 2500m so should appreciate the metres this weekend.

Lee & Anthony Freedman are in with two Craven Plate nominations this season: Hi World and Tom Melbourne.

Hi World raced only last Saturday when finishing a disappointing sixth of seven runners behind Moral Victory in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.

The High Chaparral five-year-old is unbeaten at Randwick (2-2-0-0) however and has won his only previous 2000m start so gets the chance to atone if accepted for the short seven day turnaround.

Stablemate Tom Melbourne meanwhile comes off a sixth to Jameka in Caulfield’s Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m), the Cox Plate-bound galloper also in the JRA Cup nominations for Friday’s Moir Stakes Night program.
