Sacred Elixir impressive first up winner in Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Prelude

Kiwi three year old Sacred Elixir stamped himself as one of the main contenders for the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas when he scored a first up win in the Group 3 $175,000 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield today.

The Tony Pike trained Sacred Elixir ($9) was having his first run back since winning the Group 1 $600,000 BMW J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the Brisbane Winter Carnival and was able to swamp the leaders to score an impressive win with Damian Lane in the saddle.

Runner up Revolving Door ($17) ran an improved race to hold on for second with third placegetter Wazzenme ($11) nosing out the fast finishing Seaburge ($12) for third.

Kiwi trainer Tony Pike was surprised by Sacred Elixir’s first up effort and said that there will be plenty of improvement left when he lines up in the Group 1 $1m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in a fortnight.

“It is a pleasant surprise. He has got a lot of class on his side that probably helped,” Pike said.

“Just probably being fresh today he jumped well from a good gate and travelled sweetly. Damian must have pretty confident, he eased him out three wide at the 600m and got him going in plenty of time to wind. It took him a while to get there.”

“Very surprised at first time at Caulfield over 1400m and he is only going to get better he gets up in trip.”

“At least he has had a look around Caulfield now and the extra 200m is only going to help but I wish it was 2000m.”

“He has to be competitive on today’s run and he is only going to improve, it is his first run for a while and he has had a look around this track and head towards the Guineas now.”

Pike hasn’t ruled out a run in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22 if Sacred Elixir continues to improve over the Spring Carnival.
