Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A small but classy field of three-year-olds put their Group 1 credentials for later in the spring on the line at Rosehill Racecourse this weekend in the Stan Fox Stakes 2016, betting tips and the latest odds for which are detailed below.
Running as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:35pm (AEST) on the Golden Pendant Day card, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) field is down to six starters with Chris Waller opting to run High Mist in the Gloaming Stakes instead.
Leading the Stan Fox Stakes betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Divine Prophet at $2.30.
He is favourite for Melbourne’s $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) next month, the past two winners of which had their final lead-ups in the Stan Fox.
Two back Choisir colt Divine Prophet won the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) first-up before the close fourth to Astern in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).
A fortnight between runs has him facing a field less than half the size and back down in class, he is a livewire chance to post his second Group win of the season.
The other best in the markets are the Golden Rose third placegetter Impending ($2.80) from the Godolphin stables and the James Cummings-trained Artie Schiller colt Good Standing ($7) who ran fifth in the same elite level last time out.
So do the bookies have the order of the Stan Fox Stakes odds right or is there an upset pending this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival in the set weights showdown?
#1 Impending ($2.80)
Market mover is this John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt who we are happy to follow the money trail on. After a win on debut in April he has run third in Group company three times on the trot, stepping up in class and stacking-up each time. In the Golden rose he was 2.5 lengths off his winning stablemate and gets the same track plus an extra 100m this weekend. He can improve again with James McDonald jumping on for this.
#2 Divine Prophet ($2.30)
Group 3 winner for Team Hawkes also Group 1 placed (3rd in the Champagne Stakes) over a mile as a two-year-old and not far off them for the Golden Rose fourth. The 1500m looks like it will suit to a tee three runs in as he tracks towards the Guineas over 1600m next month. He came from first-to-last to win first-up and after the tough Rose effort, he’ll enjoy facing a much smaller field.
#7 Cellarman ($31)
Big odds on the race roughie, Waller’s last colt standing in the line-up. The progressive Mossman colt hasn’t the stakes’ experience of his rivals, but in such a small field he can finish after finishing only a length away sixth at Canterbury in a blanket finish on September 7. Carried 59.5kg that day and drops to 56.5kg here.
