The Shannon Stakes 2016 is one of the key support acts on the Golden Pendant Day program at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds for the middle-distance clash found below.
Running as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEST), the field for the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) is down to eight runners after the withdrawal of #1 Counterattack (5) and #10 More To Gain (9).
Sitting top of the updated Shannon Stakes betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.30 for the win is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Hi World, a multiple Group 1 performer chasing his first win since April last year.
A further four runners are under double-figures for the win including the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro four-year-old Old North ($4.60) out to atone for a second last (ninth) in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and market mover Caped Crusader ($6) chasing his first win from seven runs at the track.

#6 Moral Victory ($10)
A wide open market with a host of livewire hopes including this nice-value local prepared by Tim Martin. The Husson seven-year-old has plenty of form at the track (14-2-1-4) including the last start win over 1200m here in a Benchmark 85 a fortnight back. He is up in class, but won that at $21 odds and drops notably in weight from 57kg to Saturday’s 53kg minimum. Jason Collett comes aboard for the ride, his first in stakes’ company since the brave fourth when under two lengths off Happy Clapper in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) as a $61 roughie last December. Also ran second in last year’s Goulburn Cup over the mile so has class and claims.
#2 Entirely Platinum ($6.50)
Looking for the class, this fellow seven-year-old also stands out. Also prepared at Rosehill, the Team Hawkes’ son of Pentire ran third first-up in mid-August in the Group 2 P.B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and was in Melbourne again last start when second last (12th), outclassed in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). He is back home at a track he is two-from-four at, dropping from 59kg to 58.5kg and in Sydney against this field is a chance.
#5 Old North ($4.60)
Plenty of boxes ticked by John O’Shea’s four-year-old who won the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) in the autumn at Rosehill before a second in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m). Also crossed fourth in the winter to Leebaz at the Gold Coast in the Group 2 Hollindale (1800m), so the form is there. Last start he resumed and beat home only one rival in the Theo Marks Stakes, but can improve with a better run here second-up.
