2016 Caulfield Guineas Prelude Tips & Betting Update

A gun field of three-year-old colts and geldings takes to Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday in the Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2016, betting tips and the updated odds for which are detailed below.

Running as Race 6 at 3:35pm (AEST) on the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day line-up, there are two early scratchings from this year’s $175,000 Group 3 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

The field is still set to run at a capacity 16 starters with the emergencies Larrikin and Lucky Beau coming in for the withdrawn Good Standing and Throssell.

Sitting top of the updated Caulfield Guineas Prelude odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a steady quote of $4.80 is the undefeated and untapped Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Evacuation.

The More Than Ready colt has won his opening two career starts in non-Black Type company including over 1400m in the wet by 2.8 lengths at Rosehill on August 27.

He gets the four weeks between runs ahead of his Melbourne and stakes’ debut and drops from 58kg to 55kg with Kerrin McEvoy retaining the ride.

Close second favourites at $5 are the in-form Kiwi raider Saracino ($5) who comes off back-to-back Group 2 wins including a successful first Australian run at Flemington in the Danehill Stakes (1200m) from September 10 and the John O’Shea-trained Danehill runner-up Archives.

So will the top three in the markets be the first three past the post in this year’s Caulfield Guineas Prelude results or is there value in a longer priced hope such as the returning JJ Atkins winner Sacred Elixir ($6.50) or the Lindsay Park-trained Group 2 VRC Sires’ winner from the autumn Seaburge ($7.50)?

#2 Saracino ($5)

Tipping the New Zealand three-year-old form to shine through in Melbourne again this spring and think this Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained colt can make it three on the trot. He saluted at home in Group 2 company by a big margin in mid-August before a successful debut down under in the Danehill. He is out over 200m further, but was under a length away third over the 1400m on a mud track to filly Luna Rossa in Group 1 class in NZ during the autumn. Will be peaking three runs in, distance suits and Damien Oliver stays on in another plus.

#1 Sacred Elixir ($6.50)

The other Kiwi in the mix is this JJ Atkins winner over the Brisbane mile from the winter. Tony Pike’s son of Pour Moir runs for the first time since here, the 1400m first-up to suit. He’s yet to run in Melbourne, but goes well fresh and is drawn well (barrier six). He is heading towards the 2500m of the VRC Derby and will keep improving on whatever he does here, but has the class to finish in the money.

#3 Seabruge ($7.50)

Think the single-figure fancies have the Trifecta covered and should see a huge run third-up from this Sebring colt who was only 1.65 lengths off for fifth over the distance at Flemington last time out. Mark Zahra continues his association, the horse a Group 2 winner at Flemington over 1400m as a two-year-old and drops from 58kg to 57.5kg at set weights plus penalties here.
