Hi World Leads 2016 Shannon Stakes Field & Betting

The improving Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Hi World has opened favourite in the Shannon Stakes 2016 markets for the quality handicap clash at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday.

A field of eight runners remain in contention for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) after the early scratching off #1 Counterattack (5) and #10 More To Gain (9) in Golden Pendant Day Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEST).

Current favourite in the updated Shannon Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au drawn in barrier four with Blake Shinn to ride is Team Freedman’s five-year-old High Chaparral stallion Hi World ($3.40).

He is yet to race at either the track or over the exact Shannon Stakes distance, but the bookies are taking no chances after his last start third at Flemington in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m).

Hi World drops from 57.5kg to 56kg this weekend in a smaller field and races in Sydney for the first time since the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) win over Wine Tales in April of 2015.

That was also his last time in the winners’ stall and connections are hoping a return to NSW will also spark a return to form for the once very promising galloper.

Close second favourite in Shannon Stakes betting this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival at $4.50 and firming is market mover Old North racing second-up for Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea.

The Lonhro stallion races as a four-year-old for just the second time and is out to atone for his disappointing ninth when beating home just one rival behind winner Mackintosh in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) a fortnight ago.

Tim Clark replaces Brenton Avdulla in the saddle of the former star three-year-old who won the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens back in March before a second to He’s Our Rokkii in this year’s edition of the Frank Packer Plate.

Occupying the third line of betting at $5 is Entirely Platinum who carries the 58.5kg top weight after the withdrawal of Counterattack (59kg) who instead heads to Melbourne for a shot at $500,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on the weekend.

Prepared by Hawkes Racing, seven-year-old Entirely Platinum is the veteran of the Shannon Stakes field and is down in class after his second last when 12th to Palentino two weeks ago in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

Before that he ran only a length away third to Miss Rose De Lago in Caulfield’s Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (2400m), while his last win was way back in August of 2014.

Despite the notable time between wins, Entirely Platinum is two-from-four at the Rosehill track and has placed in Group 1 company a number of times since his last victory including the third in last year’s Makybe Diva Stakes.

Rounding out the hopes under $10 for the win are the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Caped Crusader ($6.50) coming off a second to Moral Victory at the track from two weeks back and Waller’s remaining runner Cosmic Cube ($8.50).
