2016 Golden Rose Stakes Day Scratchings & Track Report

Rosehill Gardens Racecourse comes alive for one of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival’s major race meetings – Golden Rose Stakes Day 2016 – scratchings and the latest track report for which are detailed below.

It is partly cloudy in Sydney today with almost no chance of rain meaning the current Soft (5) track rating on the course proper at Rosehill is likely to stay, and the real mudlarks in the fields won’t get conditions their way.

Rosehill Track Report – 10/09/2016

  • Rail: +2m Entire Circuit
  • Track Rating: Soft (5)
  • Penetrometer: 5.07
  • Weather: Partly Cloudy
  • Track Type: Turf
  • Irrigation: Nil
  • Rainfall: 1.5mm last 24hrs, 23.5mm last 7 days

Racing kicks of this afternoon at 12:10pm (AEST) and continues through until the ninth and final race jumps at 5:10pm (AEST).

Four Group status spring features highlight the program including the day’s marquee race – the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) running as Race 6 and still featuring the original field of 14 three-year-olds.

Rosehill Scratchings – 10/09/2016

Race 1 (12:10pm) – $85,000 Pockit Block-It Handicap (1500m)

  • No current scratchings

Things get underway with a Benchmark 78 for the fillies and mares where a small field of eight face off. An open market has Longkissgoodnight ($3.30) as the favourite for Team Hawkes as she travels to Sydney for the first time. Better value in Labiden ($4.40) who should be ready to see out the distance, but gives the weight away carrying 60kg top weight. Best value is the Gerald Ryan-trained Stilettoed Vixen ($4.80) getting big weight relief from apprentice claim of Travis Wolfgram.

Race 2 (12:45pm) – $85,000 Schweppes Handicap (1800m)

  • #2 Rhodin Drive (3)
  • #3 Dubaiinstyle (11)

Benchmark 78 for the stayers is down to nine runners including the market mover and shortie approaching odds-on territory Antoni Giuseppe ($2.05) chasing three wins on the trot. Hugh Bowman aboard the New Zealander who won at Canterbury and Rosehill respectively leading up to this and only needs to handle the extra metres to secure the hat-trick. Value in Salthouse ($6) with James McDonald aboard who should improve notably off a first-up fifth in Australian debut.

Race 3 (1:20pm) – $85,000 #TheRaces Handicap (1200m)

  • #10 Quantrill (9)

Nine sprinters in this Benchmark 85 handicap that has a bit of class brought in by Bowman’s mount Sir Bacchus ($2.15) who made an impressive return at this track / distance last time out and who is undefeated second-up. Under the big 61.5kg here so if looking for a lighter weight hope with claims, Caped Crusader ($9) comes off two trials and goes well fresh.

Race 4 (1:55pm) – $60,000 TAB Highway Handicap (1200m)

  • #14 Farah (15)
  • #15 Major Sharpe (16)
  • #17 Elveda Vegas (10)

Class 3 handicap has 14 remaining chances. One of the day’s hardest to tip but if you’re keen on something to back the favourite Quatronic ($3.30) looks hard to hold out. Bowman’s day and he’s on this from a gun gate. Three-form-five so far and comes off win at Doomben. First time at the track, but undefeated at the distance. Smokey in the field is Diversifier ($17) dropping right back in weight from last start win at Murwillumbah.

Race 5 (2:35pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m)

  • #9 Bring Luck (2)

First of the day’s Group races has 11 chances still in the mix and the best fancied stayer is Allergic ($2.8) out wide and looking for a better run than his close fifth when never getting a clear shot at the Premier’s Cup Prelude. Money coming for Sir John Hawkwood ($4.40) who runs under John Thompson for the first time and has been in excellent trial form. Won at the distance first-up in the autumn and is a big hope, as is Waller’s Rowley Mile winner McCreery ($3.50) if he handles the 400m extra here.

Race 6 (3:10pm) – $1,000,000 Group 1 De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m)

  • No current scratchings

The big one everyone’s waiting for takes place quite early on and all 14 final acceptors for the three-years-old classic are in the mix. One of the best recent fields in a Golden Rose and the bookies are having a hard time separating the Run To The Rose winning colt Astern ($4.40) for last year’s winning trainer John O’Shea, and Chris Waller’s ace filly Omei Sword ($4.40). Market mover is the returning David Vandyke-trained ATC Sires’ winning filly Yankee Rose with El Divino ($11) the value.

Race 7 (3:50pm) – $200,000 Group 2 Task Retail Theo Marks Stakes (1300m)

  • No current scratchings

All original 10 starters in the handicap clash that has plenty of nice form lines around it. Southern Legend ($2.70) is up in class but unbeaten in past four starts. Only carrying 53kg so if he’s going to beat a field like this, now is the time. Hard to go past Waller’s first-up four-year-old Counterattack ($3.70) who is firming fast in betting, while Rebel Dane ($9.50) is the ace performer under the big kilos.

Race 8 (4:30pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Irresistible Pools Sheraco Stakes (1200m)

  • #6 Yattarna (8)

Fillies and mares face off in this set weights plus penalties sprint where a host of chances fight for favouritism, market mover Ravi ($5) winning the early battle first-up having won three on the trot at the end of last campaign. Heavens Above ($8) was good first-up in the Toy Show and will be better for that fourth here, class mare who is great value.

Race 9 (5:10pm) – $85,000 Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1400m)

  • #8 More To Gain (14)

Benchmark 78 rounds out the day and over half the remaining 13 chances are under double-figures making it a hard day to close on for punters. Favourite Dinghu Mountain ($4) shoots for a hat-trick and has Bowman aboard but plenty of value including in Coolcraft ($9.50) ready for the 1400m first-up and Conarchie ($9.50) from the good gate.
