Foxplay Wins 2016 Furious Stakes for Waller

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller will continue on the Princess Series of races this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival with his progressive filly Foxplay who resumed with an impressive Furious Stakes 2016 win at Royal Randwick.

As a two-year-old the nicely-bred daughter of Foxwedge enjoyed a win and two seconds from five starts and she returned in brilliant fashion on Chelmsford Stakes Day scoring the upset win in the $175,000 Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m).

It was an open betting race on the three-year-old fillies with Waller’s other runner, the previously undefeated Awoke, one of the favourites at the jump.

She didn’t perform up to par however, instead the filly who ran second to her over 1400m at Rosehill last time out in July 2 Foxplay proving the best on the day.

Jockey Hugh Bowman atoned for his earlier runs at Randwick and gave Foxplay a gun run from her good mid-field draw in the Furious Stakes.

Three fillies were battling for the early lead with the Gary Moore-trained Bacarella going to the front in her second-up run of the season following the third to Waller’s 2016 Thousand Guineas-bound Omei Sword in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago.

She led from Rather Sweet and Overstep while proven mudlark Global Glamour settled well in fourth for her first-up run since a big 6.3 length win on debut on a Heavy (9) track over 1000m at Kembla Grange back in late January.

Foxplay meanwhile was 63 days between runs and sat midfield throughout the run.

Quezette Stakes winning filly from Victorian I Am A Star was also a favourite with the Furious Stakes punters and by the turn for home she had moved up into fourth one off the fence.

Foxplay was moving forward once on the straight, running on with 300m to go.

Jockey Tim Clark had Bacarella out in a nice lead and she looked to be flying until Foxplay ran right over the top of her hitting the front with 50m to go.

Hitting the line aggressively, Foxplay ($8) had one and three-quarter lengths to spare over the runner-up Bacarella ($15) while Global Glamour ($5) finished third after a tough run getting caught deep.

It was a good strong win from Waller’s up-and-comer who savaged the line late, extending for Bowman to chase down the frontrunner and post her first Black-Type victory.

“A gun ride from Hugh there,” Waller said post-win.

“To reel in the winner, I thought was a very big effort.

“She’s done everything right this filly. She’s delivered.”

After the ideal resuming run the question is now whether Foxplay can extend that superb form over more distance.

Waller will put Foxplay to the test in a fortnight when she runs back at Royal Randwick on September 17 in the $175,000 Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m).

All going well she could be given the chance to race over a mile this spring at the track on Epsom Handicap Day, October 1, in the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
