2016 Ming Dynasty Quality Winner Swear Digs Deep

Having just his second career run the Team Hawkes-trained Swear showed tremendous ability first-up at Randwick over the wet track on Chelmsford Stakes Day digging deep to win the Ming Dynasty Quality 2016.

The Redoute’s Choice colt was one of just six three-year-olds lining up in this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m), Swear’s only prior run producing a Hawkesbury win on debut over 1300m in late April.

Gun hoop Tommy Berry had the ride for the youngster’s three-year-old debut on Saturday, Swear one of the first into stride before settling into second behind the James Cummings-trained filly Skylight Glow who mustered up to set the pace.

Right back at the tail end of the field was the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Taj Mahal, while the Chris Waller-trained High Chaparral colt High Mist was travelling well in second last position at the 600m.

At the top of the straight jockey Rory Hutchings still had Cummings’ returning daughter of Northern Meteor Skylight Glow in front from Swear and Bit Dusty.

High Mist and Hugh Bowman started to go forward for an inside run with 300m to go, Bowman trying to move up between runners.

He got squeezed out however with rival hoop James McDonald keeping a firm line with Shazee Lee who then dropped out giving Bowman the passage he was after.

High Mist ($5) did well to rally again late after getting into trouble, but could only manage to run second to Swear ($3.70) who tackled Skylight Glow ($7.50) and hit the front and dig deep for a long neck win.

Skylight Glow held for third to finish off the Ming Dynasty Quality trifecta that featured a number of progressive types looking ahead for a longer feature race such as the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile in Melbourne on October 8.

The 2016 Caulfield Guineas could shape-up as the ideal spring target for the Ming Dynasty Quality winner Swear who did well in his resuming run on the Heavy going looking a staying type who should improve getting out over a mile and further later in his prep.
