Sense Of Occasion heads to Newcastle Cup after Premier’s Cup win

The Kris Lees trained Sense Of Occasion will now head to the Newcastle Gold Cup after scoring a tough win in the Listed $100,000 Premier’s Cup (1900m) at Rosehill today.

Winning jockey Tim Clark brought Sense Of Occasion ($8) from well back in the field to down stablemate Singing ($4.60) by a head with Magic Hurricane ($14) doing his best work at the finish to fill third spot.

The $2.30 favourite Allergic was cluttered away midfield for most of the race and James McDonald was unable to find any clear space in the straight and wound up in fifth position.

Lees will now aim Sense Of Occasion and French import Singing towards the Group 3 $175,000 Newcastle Gold Cup at Newcastle on September 16.

“We have two live chances there,” Lees said.

“I gave up on the winner in the run. It was posted three deep without cover and the other horse was travelling sweet.”

“He might have just got there a little early the second horse, he was very good, he was game in defeat.”

“Full credit to the winner he had a tough run and was strong late.”

The Newcastle Gold Cup is three weeks away but Lees said that would fit in well with both horses’ preparations.

“Three weeks yesterday, it is a nice preparation. He has had a tough run the winner and the second horse will only improve going forward. They are live chances.”
