Defcon first up winner in H.D.F. McNeil Stakes

Sydney colt Defcon was back in the winner’s stall with a first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield today.

Defcon chalked up a race to winning double for the training partnership of Peter and Paul Snowden after Redzel led all of the way to win the Group 3 $150,000 The Resimax Stakes (1100m) forty minutes earlier.

While Peter Snowden praised the ability of Defcon, it was the rail’s hugging ride from Dwayne Dunn that assisted the Choisir colt in recording his second win from five starts.

Dunn settled midfield on Defcon ($7.50) and moved up behind the leader I’m Too Hot rounding the home turn, sweating on a run.

The leader eventually rolled off the fence allowing Dunn to unleash Defcon’s powerful finishing burst that saw him score a comfortable win in the end.

The Lindsay Park trained Highland Beat ($4.80) fought on well in the straight to run second with Wazzenme ($10) filling third spot.

Snowden will now send Defcon back to Sydney but plans to return to Melbourne to run him in the Group 2 $200,000 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 10.

“He gave a great ride, and it just panned out perfectly well,” Peter Snowden said.

“To the horse’s credit the first time here railed perfectly and took a needle eye opening and showed that customary 300m dash that he has.”

“It will win more races than he will lose by them. He is only lightly raced.”

“I am positive in my mind he can improve off that and going forward to the Danehill in a couple of weeks time looks perfect for him.”
