Magic Hurricane Tops 2016 Premier’s Cup Field & Weights

The John O’Shea-trained Magic Hurricane leads a quality field of stayers in this Saturday’s Premier’s Cup 2016 and is top weight for the Rosehill Racecourse showdown.

A field of 11 hopefuls are accepted to face off in Rosehill Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST) when the $100,000 Listed Premier’s Cup (1900m) runs as the major support act on the Run To The Rose Day card in Sydney.

Set to cart a hefty 61kg from barrier nine with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle is the Godolphin-raced import Magic Hurricane who is second-up for the season.

The seven-year-old son of Hurricane run comes off a fifth to Testashadow in the Spring Preview (1400m) at the track on August 13 and will appreciate the step up in the metres.

He hasn’t won a race since the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) in Sydney last October, a race he could target again this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, and is out to atone for a flat autumn that resulted in four unplaced runs.

O’Shea has also accepted for Allergic who carries 58kg from barrier two with ace Sydney hoop James McDonald aboard.

McDonald replaces Avdulla in the saddle and the Street Cry stallion comes off a one and a half-length win at the track from a fortnight back when winning the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) in impressive style.

He carried a half-kilo more that day and has a strong record at Rosehill of two wins and a second form four starts to date.

The other best out of the Premier’s Cup Prelude is the Chris Waller-trained runner-up Loophole.

The seven-year-old drops from 56.5kg to 54.5kg heading into the rematch and has drawn well in barrier three with Tommy Berry coming aboard.

Ace Sydney horseman Waller has also accepted for Junoob and Sacred Master giving him a three-pronged assault on the handicap showdown.

Junoob carries the second top weight of 60.5kg, dropping from the 62kg he had on his back on August 18 for his brave third behind stablemates McCreery and Marenostro in an all-Waller trifecta in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury.

The extra metres will suit the veteran nine-year-old this week, Junoob boasting two wins and a third from four 1900m runs to date.

Sacred Master gets into the Premier’s Cup field on a manageable 56kg, the five-year-old looking to atone for two eighths this time in.

The New Zealand expat ran third in the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) over the two miles back in March, but has failed to make a solid impression down under including the unplaced run to Allergic in the Prelude last time out.

Other notable hopes in the Black-Type include the Kris Lees-trained French import Singing who comes off a second at Canterbury over the distance in his Australian debut and stablemate Sense Of Occasion.
