A class field of three-year-old fillies face off in the Silver Shadow Stakes 2016 at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds for which are detailed below.
Set to run as Randwick Race 5 at 2:20pm (AEST) on the stellar Warwick Stakes Day card, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) features 11 hopefuls.
Leading the latest Silver Shadow Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $2.80 is the Chris Waller-trained Omei Sword who should be fit and firing first-up after two recent Sydney trials.
The Group performed daughter of High Chaparral is followed in Silver Shadow Stakes betting by a host of genuine chances including Manaya ($3.70) who impressed jockey Glyn Schofield with her Warwick Farm trial from last week and the returning John O’Shea-trained Group 2 winner Calliope ($4.50) who is easing out for her first-up run.
So should you stick to the best in betting or is there an upset Silver Shadow Stakes result pending from a filly further down the markets such as Thyme For Roses ($12) for last year’s winning trainer Gai Waterhouse or the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained daughter of Northern Meteor Quick Feet ($14)?
#3 Thyme For Roses ($12)
Like the value on offer for this Waterhouse & Bott-trained filly at double-figures to hand Waterhouse with back-to-back wins following the Silver Shadow success of subsequent Flight Stakes champ Speak Fondly last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. This daughter of Redoute’s Choice is nicely-bred and a Group 3 winner down the Flemington straight. She ran fifth last time out in Sydney during the autumn but was beaten under two lengths. She has had two good Randwick trials at the track since for a second and a win and first-up can fire and surprise.
#1 Calliope ($4.50)
Plenty of boxes ticked by the resuming Godolphin-raced Exceed And Excel filly who beat home Omei Sword (2nd) in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March. She then failed to impress when a wide alley (14 of 16) saw her finish 12th to Capitalist in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m). She won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on debut at her only previous start at the track, has class and form around Saturday’s favourite.
#5 Omei Sword ($2.80)
All the money is on this Waller-trained filly, the stable firing already in the early stages of the spring. She will take benefit from this run with a 1600m goal coming up later in the season, but should be fit enough to finish in the placings after three recent trials. She was runner-up in the Magic Night two back and ninth last time out to Yankee Rose in the Inglis’ Sires. Runs well fresh and the 1200m first-up should also suit.
