Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
John O’Shea’s returning Golden Slipper failure Calliope will be out to atone when she races first-up in the Silver Shadow Stakes 2016 field at Randwick Racecourse on the weekend.
Set to run as Randwick Race 5 at 2:20pm (AEST) as part of the Warwick Stakes Day action, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Alpha Flight Services Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) field features 11 promising three-year-old fillies.
Drawn in barrier seven and carrying the 57kg top weight in the set weights plus penalties clash is the Godolphin-raced Calliope in her first run since her 12th to Capitalist in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March.
Before that the daughter of Exceed And Excel won two of her three early career runs with a Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) victory at Randwick on debut last October and more recently a Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) victory in the autumn over Omei Sword.
The Chris Waller-trained Magic Night Stakes runner-up Omei Sword is also accepted for a rematch in this weekend’s Silver Slipper Stakes.
Running from barrier five with Brenton Avdulla booked for the ride, High Chaparral filly Omei Sword also finished out of the money in a Group 1 last start when ninth to Yankee Rose in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 2.
She runs well fresh, hit the line well in a trial earlier this week at Rosehill and is sure to make an impression first-up before being tested over further distance later this season.
The rails run from barrier one in the Silver Shadow this year belongs to the Gary Nickson-trained Rather Sweet who Tye Angland rides in the Group 2.
The Mutawaajid filly saluted over 1100m at Gosford as the odds-on favourite on August 11 and steps up in class second-up here dropping from 59kg to 55kg.
She has raced in a Group 2 line-up once before when fourth to Astern in February’s Silver Slipper Stakes and could impress from the nice alley.
Also drawn well for Saturday is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Quick Feet (barrier three), the nicely-bred daughter of Northern Meteor out to improve on a last start fifth to Thronum in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m).
The Rosebud was run on a Heavy (10) a fortnight back, Quick Feet beaten 3.4 lengths in her first run since a ninth in the Golden Slipper as a $101 shot in the autumn.
Thronum’s trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott also have a nice runner in the Silver Shadow Stakes in Thyme For Roses (barrier eight).
The daughter of Redoute’s Choice won the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders (1200m) at Flemington in March before a last start fifth to Missrock at Randwick in April’s Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m), the filly coming off a Randwick win from August 9.
Also in the mix is Michael Costa’s daughter of Hinchinbrook Manaya who won the Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) at Scone on debut in mid-May, Saturday her first run since.
