A host of smart Flight Stakes-bound fillies take to the Royal Randwick track for Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes 2016 including the well-fancied nominee Omei Sword.
Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller has nominated his High Chaparral filly Omei Sword to kick off her Sydney Spring Racing Carnival bid in the $175,000 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on Warwick Stakes Day.
She is one of 14 original entries for the three-years-old fillies event, Racing NSW extending nominations until 11:00am (AEST) on Tuesday morning.
The first of the Princess Series of races for 3YO fillies, the Silver Shadow Stakes makes a nice lead-up to events including the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) in September as well as the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on October 1.
Last year’s silver Shadow Stakes winner Speak Fondly (2015) went on to win the Furious Stakes and Flight Stakes, as well as placing second in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in between behind Exosphere.
Waller is likely to set Omei Sword on a Golden Rose Stakes mission this season on September 10 after her first-up run on Saturday, the filly at a current futures quote of $15 for the Group 1 event through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Omei Sword won at Rosehill on debut in late February before a Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) second at the track, but is out to atone for her ninth to Yankee Rose in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick from April when she resumes.
Waller has also nominated Gretna for the Silver Shadow Stakes on the weekend, the Snitzel filly yet to race in Black-Type company.
Omei Sword meanwhile could be Melbourne bound later this season and is the current $9 second favourite to take out the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) over the Caulfield mile on October 8.
The Magic Night Stakes winning filly that defeated Omei Sword in the autumn, Calliope is also nominated for the Silver Shadow Stakes.
The John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel backed-up from her Group 2 win to finish a disappointing 12th to Capitalist in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) last time out.
She pays $26 in Golden Rose betting to continue onto next month’s elite level against the boys, while the other shortest priced Rose home in the Silver Shadow entries at $21 is Manaya.
Prepared at Warwick Farm by Michael Costa, nicely-bred Hinchinbrook filly Manaya has had won run to date for a stakes win over 1100m on debut at Scone in mid-May.
She comes off a fourth in a trial at home from last Friday behind current co-favourite to win the Golden Rose Stakes this season Impending.
Last year’s Silver Shadow Stakes winning trainer Gai Waterhouse is back with an entry this year, Thyme For Roses, who she trains in partnership with her former racing manager Adrian Bott.
The Redoute’s Choice filly is a Group 3 winner down the Flemington straight and is first-up on the back of a Randwick trial win earlier in the month, her last official run producing a close fifth behind Missrock from April 9 in the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Other notable Silver Shadow Stakes nominations include Anthony Cummings’ Group 2 placed Moqueen, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Reisling Stakes runner-up Quick Feet coming off a fifth to Thronum in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) from August 6, and Tony Gollan’s Brisbane visitor and Group 3 winner Zelady’s Night Out.
