Modern Wonder Heads 2016 Quezette Stakes Betting

A gun barrier draw for Saturday’s Quezette Stakes 2016 has seen the lightly-raced Leon & Troy Corstens-trained filly Modern Wonder shoot to the top of betting for her spring debut at Caulfield Racecourse.

The field for the $150,000 Group 3 Winslow Group Stakes (1100m) – registered as the Quezette Stakes – is down to 15 after the early scratching of Kentucky Miss (3) who heads to Sydney instead to take on Capitalist in Rosehill’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).

That brings the top fancy Modern Wonder into barrier four with Daniel Moore booked to ride the daughter of Snitzel for her three-year-old debut.

Quezette Stakes odds at have her at $5.50 to remain undefeated following her success in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) in Adelaide on April 23 where she beat home Motown Lil by two lengths.

Former favourite in Quezette Stakes betting I Am A Star meanwhile drew the outside barrier for the weekend and has eased out to $6 second favouritism in the markets.

The Shane Nichols-trained daughter of I Am Invincible has won two of her three starts to date, the latest on May 21 at Morphettville in the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m).

She comes off a second in a Cranbourne trial from Monday morning and will need to be at her best to overcome the nasty alley for her spring return.

Another five fillies are also under double-figures to win the weekend’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival lead-up including the rails-drawn Sword Of Light ($8).

Damian Lane retains the ride on the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained New Approach filly who comes off a second to Derryn at the track over 1000m from July 30.

She drops from 58kg that run to 57.5kg at set weights plus penalties against her own kind in the Quezette where she shoots for her first win since saluting at the track in late January’s Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Preview (1000m).

The next best fancied are the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Conscious ($8.50) and Athena Lass ($9) for Lindsay Park.

Beautifully-bred So You Think filly Conscious has had just the one run to date from February at Flemington when doing it tough from barrier 15 of 15 to cross second to Weatherly in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m).

Athena Lass also has just her second start on the weekend, the daughter of Snitzel to jump from barrier two with Cory Parish aboard again after he guided her to a narrow Moonee Valley win over 1000m in the wet on July 13.

Rounding out the hopes under $10 is the early market mover Concealer heavily supported from $15 to $9.50 despite her double-digit draw (14 into 13).

Craig Williams is booked to ride Tony McEvoy’s Nicconi filly who is a Group 3 winner from last year’s Melbourne Cup Day meeting and also Group 1 performed when ninth in the Blue Diamond Stakes in February.
