Tycoon Tara Wins 2016 Missile Stakes for Team Snowden

Peter & Paul Snowden may have scratched from the field their star three-year-old Capitalist but the stable still enjoyed a Missile Stakes 2016 win at Randwick on the weekend with smart mare Tycoon Tara.

Golden Slipper winning colt Capitalist was scratched from his first-up assignment in Saturday’s $175,000 Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) due to a mud Sydney track, the field for which jumped with just five starters.

It was an even affair in betting and Capitalist’s stablemate Tycoon Tara, whose last run was an unplaced Flemington effort from May, started at odds of $7.50.

Jockey Blake Shinn cuddled her throughout the run on the Heavy (10) course, the six-year-old Written Tycoon mare’s second career run on that kind of going, in a well-timed ride.

On the line she had a half-length to spare over the returning Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane ($2.50F), while Mount Nebo ($6) finished off the Missile Stakes trifecta a further half-length back for third.

Shinn was thrilled to ride a winner for owner Tony Krushka, who he credits for some of his very first wins when he started out in the saddle, and said the key to getting Tycoon Tara to perform on the bog track was to save her till the closing stages.

“When I started, Tony gave me a lot of rides from when I was 15 to about 20-years-old, that’s when I was really learning,” Shinn told the media post-win on Saturday.

“I just got her to her top before letting her off the bit. Horses don’t find that much on those sort of tracks and it is a case of keeping them happy.

“We are in control even when things were pushing up on our inside.

“It was a very good effort and just showed how good Peter and Paul Snowden are, because she had to be fit out there.”

Co-trainer Peter Snowden was full of post-race praise for Shinn and indicated the lucrative $400,000 Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 24 as a good spring aim for Tycoon Tara after a run in Randwick’s $125,000 Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) on August 20.

“He just cuddled her and cuddled and you could see she was on empty that last 100m,” he said.

“She had good form, it was only the last prep where she struggled. It is a great result for the new owner and she was very brave.

“She has thrived since she come into work and is getting better all the time.

“I think the change of scenery can really help a horse like her.

“She can [go] on to the Toy Show and she has form over seven furlongs [1400m] and the Golden Pendant is there for her.”
