Thronum Scores Upset 2016 The Rosebud Result

The new training partnership of Gai Waterhouse and her former racing manager Adrian Bott got underway in the best way possible on Saturday with smart young colt Thronum scoring an upset win in Randwick’s The Rosebud 2016.

A field of seven three-year-olds lined up in this year’s $100,000 Listed The Randwick City Council Rosebud (1200m) including the Waterhouse & Bott-trained son of Snitzel Thronum.

A winner of two of his three career starts before The Rosebud, Thronum ($3.20) dug deep for his first stakes assignment and handled the Heavy (10) track for his gutsy long-neck win over the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained favourite Mediterranean ($1.80).

Finishing off The Rosebud trifecta was $31 roughie Miss Beneteau, Jason Coyle’s up-and-coming filly also making her Black-Type debut in the traditional lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 10.

Despite having been scratched out of a first-up run in Saturday’s Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m), won by stablemate Tycoon Tara, due to the bog track – Capitalist sits top of early Golden Rose betting at paying $4.40 for the win.

Thronum meanwhile is further down the futures Golden Rose Stakes odds at a generous $26 to hand Waterhouse her first win in the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival feature.

“That was essential,” Waterhouse said post-win on Saturday.

“We knew we had Thronum there and we knew he could be our first winner together.

“He is just an exciting horse and the way he did it shows there is more to come. Just like for me and Adrian.

“It shows nothing has changed the winners are still coming and he is going to be hard to beat in the Golden Rose.”

Bott was also pleased with The Rosebud result but said he wasn’t surprised to see his quality colt come up with the goods after Thronum ran a brave second in the wet at Canter bury leading into his stakes’ debut.

“You are working in the stable and not thinking about it but it was good to get it out of the way,” Bott said.

“It is a little relief.

“We went to Canterbury on Wednesday with our first runner and ran last, this is a long way from there.

“He is a horse we have had a plan with and the Golden Rose is still there for him, if he keeps standing up.

“You try to concentrate other things but it is exciting to have that win.”

Jockey Tommy Berry continued his association with Thronum, who he said was still learning, and hopes to stay on for next month’s Golden Rose bid, a race he won aboard the Peter Snowden-trained Epaulette back in 2012.

“That was different, it was tougher … he didn’t show that turn of foot,” Berry explained.

“It was just tough because he is still learning and doesn’t know what to do.

“He loves those conditions but I still think he will be better on top of the ground.

“It was actually great to get that win for Adrian because it is the perfect way to start for him.”

Snowden meanwhile was still pleased with the performance of his narrowly defeated favourite Mediterranean who was still on track for a shot at the Golden Rose against star stablemate Capitalist, the Smart Missile colt at a current quote of $15 for the Group 1 victory.

“He just lost his momentum and it took a while to revved up again and by then he had too much too do,” Snowden said.

“It was a great effort and he is going to be a lot better on a drier track. He is still going the right way.”
