Shane Nichols’ Group 3 winning filly I Am A Star is one of the headline nominations taken for the Quezette Stakes 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday in Melbourne.
A top support act on the PB Lawrence Stakes Day card for this weekend, the $150,000 Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) has attracted a bumper 22 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage.
Many of the entries are kicking off their Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaigns and tracking towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back at Caulfield on October 8.
Among the Thousand Guineas-bound fillies nominated for the Quezette is the Mornington-trained daughter of I Am Invincible, I Am A Star who was last seen winning Morphettville’s Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide.
That followed an 1100m win down the Flemington straight in early May, I Am A Star having been brought on fitness wise with a second in an 800m Cranbourne trial in the wet on Monday morning.
She pays $21 in futures Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, with the shortest-priced filly in those markets nominated for the Quezette Stakes being Modern Wonder ($15).
Prepared by Leon & Troy Corstens, the Snitzel filly has had just the one run to date but made an instant impression on debut in Adelaide on April 23 with a two length Black-Type win over 1050m.
Team Corstens have also nominated their Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) runner-up from February, So You Think filly Conscious in Saturday’s Quezette Stakes.
A $21 chance for the 2016 Thousand Guineas, the David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Snitzel filly Athena Lass is also a lightly-raced and promising Quezette Stakes entry this season.
She won in the wet over 1000m on debut at Moonee Valley on July 13 and could line-up with stablemates Najmaat and Zamzam this weekend.
Redoute’s Choice filly Zamzam is best known for her third as a 21/1 shot behind Extreme Choice in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in late February.
She went on to win a Moonee Valley stakes race next time out before her 10th to Yankee Rose in Randwick’s Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 2.
First-up off a break, back in Melbourne and down in both class and distance put Zamzam right in the Quezette Stakes mix should she run in the final field.
Other notable hopes include Written Tycoon filly Hot Dipped who ran fifth in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last time out on the back of three Launceston wins in Tasmania, the Joe Pride-trained daughter of Foxwedge Kentucky Miss who is also nominated to take on the boys in Saturday’s Vain Stakes, Black-Type winner and Group 2 performer Selenia, Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO Classic winning Sepoy filly She’s Positive and Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview winner Sword Of Light.
