Ten runners remain in contention for Saturday’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville Racecourse following scratchings; representing particularly good value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Victorian raider Beirut remains a clear $3.50 favourite in 2016 Spring Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Daytona Grey ($4.80) and consistent local Riziz ($5).
Will Beirut justify favouritism and win the 2016 Spring Stakes, or will one of her classy rivals post an upset?
Trainer Henry Dwyer has confirmed that Beirut will retire into a career as a broodmare following her run in the Spring Stakes, and the six-year-old is positioned and weighted well, and most importantly in the right form to post a maiden black type win in the race. Returning to winning form in the Le Pine Funerals BM70 (1200m) on May 11th, the Lonhro mare has since claimed wins in each of the Night Racing Finale (1200m), Cove Hotel BM70 (1200m) and Mypunter.com Handicap (1200m). Drawn ideally in barrier 5, Beirut will carry only 56.5kgs in the Spring Stakes.
Riziz is a proven performer at the course, class and distance, has returned to racing in typically competitive form this time and is worth consideration for a bet at current Spring Stakes odds. Claiming thirteen race wins and as many minors through forty-five starts, the Zariz gelding clearly required a run when returning from a freshen-up for ninth in the Di Officer Design Handicap (1200m) but responded with a gutsy run for fourth in the Schweppes Pepsi Handicap (1200m) on July 16th. Riziz could receive the run of the race from barrier 3 and will be partnered by in-form hoop Todd Pannell.
Consistent gelding Karlovasi carries typically-smart form into the Spring Stakes and arguably offer punters the best value for money in betting markets at current $8.50 odds for success or $2.75 to finish in the first three. Finishing outside the first three only a handful of times through his sixteen start career so far, the Reean gelding delivered a classy field a comfortable defeat in the Ubet 3.y.o Plate (1200m) last time out on July 2nd and should prove tough to beat in the Spring Stakes on Saturday, with luck in running.
