Angland Confident with Smart Volatility in Aurie’s Star

Jockey Tye Angland posted his 700th winner over the weekend and is confident of adding to that record in Saturday’s 2016 Aurie’s Star Handicap aboard Smart Volatility.

Angland enjoyed two Rosehill wins last Saturday including aboard the Chris Waller-trained Marenostro in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m), form he is hoping to bring to Melbourne this weekend.

He is booked to retain the ride on the John Sargent-trained Hong Kong import Smart Volatility who he rode to a narrow victory from the outside alley (14 of 14) on July 13 at Grafton in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m).

Angland was thrilled with the run from the Danewin gelding during the Grafton Cup Carnival and also the now eight-year-old’s subsequent Randwick trial win over 850m on July 29.

“It was a tough win at Grafton. He did plenty of work and was there to be beaten,” Angland told The Daily Telegraph.

“We’ve taken him back to the trials since the Ramornie and he won the trial as well.

“He’s found form and keeps improving. He will be very hard to beat.”

Angland is happy to stay aboard the veteran sprinter for his shot at another Black-Type win down under this time the Victoria way of racing at Flemington in the $150,000 Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) that kicks off the new season of Group racing in Melbourne.

“He’s a winner over the straight six at Sha Tin, so Flemington should suit him,” Angland added.

Another notable hope likely to line-up in the Aurie’s Star Handicap field this weekend is Beirut, Henry Dwyer’s Lonhro mare a winner of her past four starts on the trot.

The latest saw the now six-year-old beat home Nadeem Lass by a half-length over 1200m at Caulfield on July 16.

She bypassed last Saturday’s Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at the same track and distance, subsequently won by Lord Of The Sky for his first win in over 750 days, in favour of the Aurie’s Star down the Flemington straight.
