A bumper 21 nominees are in the mix for Saturday’s $120,000 Group 3 David R Coles AM Spring Stakes (1200m), which kicks off Group racing in South Australia for the new season.

Headline the Spring Stakes nominations is 2014 Emirates Stakes champ Hucklebuck, the now six-year-old son of Elvstroem chasing his first win since.

It has been nearly two years between wins for the gelding then whose last top three finish was a third to Suavito in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield back in mid-February.

His two subsequent runs left plenty to be desired when eighth to Turn Me Loose in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and last when eighth to Winx as a 41/1 roughie at Rosehill in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Hucklebuck faces an easier class of rivals if accepted for the Spring Stakes however, has a 50% winning strike rate first-up (6-3-0-0) and plenty of good form over the track (3-2-0-0) and distance (6-3-0-1).

Stokes has also nominated for the consistent California Dane five-year-old Usain Dane who comes off three top three runs at Morphettville Parks this winter including a last start third to Scratchy Lass from July 23 when defeated under a length.

The local stables of Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas have two entries with Artie Schiller seven-year-old Daytona Grey and Gamblin’ Guru who hasn’t raced since his 15th to Purple Smile in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) back in mid-March.

Peter Blanch’s Adelaide Cup fourth placed Jim’s Journey is another top Spring Stakes nominee who will only improve on what he does first-up over this distance.

The 2014 Spring Stakes winner Riziz is also in the mix this season, Ken Sweeney’s Zariz eight-year-old chasing his first win since last August and out to improve on a last start fourth at Gawler from July 16.

Richard Jolly has two in the mix with his Hussonet eight-year-old Karacatis and Reaan four-year-old Karlovasi coming off a win at the track / distance from a month ago.

Many sprinters are dually nominated across two states for the weekend entered for both the weight-for-age Spring Stakes as well as Flemington’s Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) in Melbourne.

Notable chances nominated for both Group 3 sprints include Henry Dwyer’s flying mare Beirut chasing her fifth win on the trot, Morphettville local Cavaloce for Will Clarken, the Mick Price-trained Host seven-year-old Mighty Like and Darren Weir’s Snitzel stallion Sooboog.

See below for the full Adelaide Spring Stakes 2016 nominations, the field and barriers out on Wednesday when our preferred sportsbook Ladbrokes.com.au will also release markets making now the time to sign-up with the bookie rewarding new depositing players with up to $500 in bonuses with use of the code BETBONUS!
