2016 Lightning Stakes Winner Viddora Melbourne Bound

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival riches are calling for Lloyd Kennewell’s progressive filly Viddora who posted a Black-Type win at home in Morphettville’s Lightning Stakes 2016 over the weekend.

The daughter of I Am Invincible enjoyed a win in her final start as a three-year-old with a narrow long-neck victory over Ocean Embers ($6) in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) in Adelaide.

Jockey Matthew Neilson had Viddora ($8.50) doing plenty of work from her outside barrier (14 of 14), but despite covering all the ground she proved too good for her rivals.

“It was a big effort, she was off the track all the way,” her locally-based trainer Kennewell said from Darwin on Saturday.

“I thought she might have been in trouble but she was good enough to fight them off.

“She’s a horse who likes clear running and doesn’t like it when crowded up with horses around her.

“It was a super effort.”

Finishing off the Lightning Stakes trifecta a further two and a quarter lengths back for third was the David Jolly-trained Showpero ($4), the young Kaphero filly suffering her first loss at her third career start.

Kennewell has big spring plans for Viddora, who turned four on Monday, and said she would next run at Caulfield Racecourse on August 13 in her first interstate run since a third over 1000m at Moonee Valley behind Serene Majesty last October in a Group 3 showdown.

She has won five of her 12 starts to date for $224,700 in total prize money, the Lightning Stakes her first win in stakes’ company.

“She’s a cracking filly and getting black type with her is important, so the pressure is off there,” Kennewell said.

“She’s got a big future post-racing as well.

“There is a race at Caulfield in a couple of weeks that looks ideal for her and there a lot of similar sprinting races for mares in Melbourne early on in the spring that will be options.”
