Michael Moroney will give his smart filly Daniela Rosa a break after her weekend run in Melbourne before targeting a late spring return on Emirates Stakes Day in the Matriarch Stakes 2016.
The closing day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival runs on Saturday November 5 at Flemington Racecourse and features two elite levels as well as the $300,000 Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) for mares.
A rising four-year-old daughter of Dane Shadow, Daniela Rosa has the Matriarch in her sights according to Moroney who will send her out for a freshen-up following her start in Saturday’s $80,000 Wilson Medic One Rising Stars Final (1800m) at Flemington.
She is drawn wide in barrier nine of 10 for the Benchmark 84 clash, but will be well-weighted with Jake Bayliss (a2) to use his apprentice claim to bring down her allocated weight of 56.5kg.
Daniela Rosa vies for a third straight win after a 142m success at Sale in late June and her last start success carting 59.5kg to victory in the lucrative Rivette Final (1600m) over the mile at Flemington on July 9.
She goes up to 1800m for the first time, but with a smart career record of four wins from seven starts and the weight relief she looks a good thing to make it a winning hat-trick this campaign.
Moroney said he couldn’t be happier with her recent progress after her disappointing autumn runs when unplaced in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) back in March after she failed to race during last year’s spring season.
“We had a bit of trouble with her in the spring, she wasn’t coming through them that well,” he told Racing Victoria.
“A stronger version now, and she’s bouncing through her runs.
“She’s only had two runs in this campaign, so we wanted to chance our arm at the 1800m, and it’ll give us a bit of a guide as to what black-type races we chase in the spring with her.
“If she happens to run it out strongly, there’s the Matriarch later in the spring for her, and it means we can give her a little bit more time off.”
The Matriarch Stakes was won last season by Lucia Valentina (2015) who went on to win the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick this April.
In current Flemington race markets for Saturday, Daniela Rosa is the $2.70 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Her main dangers include the 60kg top weight and market mover Yulong Baby ($3.40) from the Mick Price stables and the rails-drawn Ma Jones ($4.80) prepared by last year’s Melbourne Cup winning horseman Darren Weir.
